AR support?

@carloscosta,

Thanks, but I’ll still stay in the “wait and see” camp on AR, simply based on past experience/hype. Ouya/tvOS was supposed to change gaming as the world knew it (neither actually did). Google Glass was supposed to revolutionize the way people “saw the world” (it didn’t).  Smart watches were supposed to effectively replace our phones (they haven’t). Those “Segway” personal-transport things were supposed to revolutionize human transit and minimize cars on the road… now Segway is something you just occasionally see tourists riding, while cars remain in full force.

Don’t get me wrong, I want to be excited about the future and the amazing things it will bring… I have just been over-hyped and underwhelmed too many times on the “this will revolutionize the world” campaigns.

I agree that it’s a good idea to only implement new features into Corona only if enough people actually want it ( or if you guys have a certain direction you would like to go through)

Regarding Overhype/new tech., AR isn’t just a new gimmick that is going to fade away quickly like 3D for example. And as I mentioned above companies like General Electric and VW started to implement this technology in their manufacturing process. And companies like that don’t follow hype or try to look cool, they wouldn’t go anywhere near AR if they weren’t sure it’s going to save them time and/or money. Youtube is filled with videos about how AR is being used in different industries.

You mentioned Ouya/tvOs but nobody actually thought that they were going to change gaming forever, not even the people who create those things. Apple TV isn’t being marketed as a gaming device at all. Google Glass failed because it’s very expensive and it’s an extra peripheral that you have to carry/hold/wear at all times. The technology itself wasn’t bad. Mobile phones already solved that peoblem.

AR is not just for entertainment or people who want to jump on the Pokemon Go hype, it’s actually a very useful, cheap and practical technology. I get that you would like to wait and see before investing in it, but comparing it to Ouya is just a shortsighted (no offense).

Everyone needs to realize that arkit (Apple) ~= equal to google core ar.

Just a question, when everyone is saying support ar? Are we talking 3d or 2d? I am assuming 3d, because that is really what ar is all about.

What Corona needs to do support arkit (apple)

It needs to add sprite kit/scene kit for 2d and 3d object, open gl and arkit don’t mix. (6-8 months to make is my guess, depending on engineering resources )

Arkit plugin it self (2-4 months to make is my guess, depending on engineering resources )

What Corona needs to do support arcore (google/android)

Open gl 3d support: currently, 2d is supported. So corona is going to have to add 3d open gl for Android. If they going to do this, they would probably support iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows.  (10-14 months to make is my guess, depending on engineering resources )

ArCore plugin it self (2-4 months to make is my guess, depending on engineering resources )

Corona should also throw in a 3d editor to make it easier to develop, I don’t know how long this would take, but properly a long time( like around a year).

It is also important to out that unity is way bigger and can do 3d and ar stuff.

Just compare employee sizes

well, you could do a lot with 2D recognition for a start. already being done with other frameworks:

I think this quote describes it pretty well

“It’s a AR play,” Bachman says. “That’s the frothiest space in the Valley right now. Nobody understands it but everyone wants in. Any idiot could walk into a ******* room, utter the letters ‘a’ and ‘r’, and VC’s would hurl bricks of cash at them.

“By the time they find out it’s vaporware, it’s too late. I’ve got to get into this.”

so if i “quote” myself or any user here that defend AR, that makes my point better?

It’s his point of view…like mine or any other else here. Apple invested hard on AR, even on chipset level. Touch force they invested also (and all new devices still have it, contrary to Android vendors that one year they bet one thing…another they bet on another leaving the other behind). In this case, Google is investing also in AR, I don’t think Apple or Google abandoning this technology soon, meanwhile lots of apps will appear on stores that will make money…even if in 2, 3 years it will be gone (which I doubt) all the companies that made those projects won money. You can make money selling apps to other companies also you know? not only doing games and getting money from advertisement or selling in app items, or selling the app it self.

There is a very simple solution here.  File a feature request and vote it up. Having some use cases of where AR would be useful to you would be helpful in the feature request as well (add to the comments of any of the relevant posts). There are two active entries already:
