Well, that didn’t last long.
Really, I am not mad at gremlin. A business decision has to be made for the sake of staying in business. That’s fine. They handled it appropriately and that is fine.
Really, the core of the issue is there wouldn’t be a silly need for plug ins and all this nonsense if we had access to bring in a library from anywhere like I could on pretty much any other platform (moai, gideros, love, marmalade, and the 800 pound gorilla everyone is thinking about UNITY).
Currently, I switched to unity. You may ask “But you have pro subscription?”. Yes I have pro subscription to corona until april or may 2015. Let’s just say I’m looking at my migration path for the business.
I get everything I need out of the free version, and asset store has everything I need for IAP, and it’s easy to bring in whatever AD sdk I want and I don’t have to wait for a plug in. Same goes for amazon game circle, and all the other stuff that people are waiting on. Plus, you know stuff like desktop builds for mac / win / web and pretty much all devices doesn’t hurt either. I can easily afford going pro, but really at this point I don’t need to with unity. I still have plans to use corona for some stuff, but I’m finding more and more to just migrate.
After talking with several educators who have voiced that the demand is just not their for those materials but the demand is really heavy for unity, that kind of says something. Same goes for demand for plugins, I can see why Gremlin decided to back out.
Corona is great, it’s fast and easy to use. However, situations like this where a plug in has to be written by some third party because the library is closed off is silly. I’m pretty sure I’m not alone in this opinion, and whatever that opinion is is fine. Everyone uses something to fit their needs, if it’s working for you that’s cool. If not, try something else.
Gremlin, you are ok in my book. I understand the decision, and best of luck. It was fun while it lasted maybe you’ll make something for unity ? heh.
