Not confident in future of Corona SDK

Has anyone from Corona commented in this thread yet?

If the worst case scenario does happen - that Corona goes belly up… I suppose it wouldn’t be too difficult to transition to another SDK. [import]uid: 141560 topic_id: 33978 reply_id: 135248[/import]

This sky is falling, the sky is falling!
Come on ppl we all gonna be fine corona not going anywhere cause of a few ppl leaving [import]uid: 7911 topic_id: 33978 reply_id: 135254[/import]

The fact that all of Peach’s tutorials have been removed fro learningcorona.com is a huge, huge, setback for me personally. Those were the best tutorials out there. I should have downloaded them all…

Does anyone have them?? I need tutorials!

Did Peach ever post an explanation of why she left and took all her stuff with her? Are the tutorials posted elsewhere?? [import]uid: 191855 topic_id: 33978 reply_id: 135291[/import]

It is clear that Peach has a soft spot for Carlos, it is no surprise that Peach has let after Carlos left. Good on Carlos for building another startup but I am confident in CoronaLabs.

Until CoronaLabs start messing with builds big time and screwing things up Im staying right here.

Good luck Peach, it’s sad that you left throwing daggers at CoronaLabs.

Opinions are my own. [import]uid: 177551 topic_id: 33978 reply_id: 135292[/import]

That was a big bummer for me as well… I have all of them. I’ll give you a hint on how I got them.

Google Cache  [import]uid: 141560 topic_id: 33978 reply_id: 135293[/import]

I don’t see a POOF happening anytime soon.

In fact, due to the new funding CL just received and other recent news, I think Corona SDK is on the verge of becoming the “go to” proprietary 2D framework.

I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’ve played around with Moai SDK and Stencyl – I love them both and will continue to poke at them because that’s the kind of guy I am (programmer nerd). But the projects I’m bringing to market are 95% focused on Corona SDK because that’s where I see the traction.

I’ll have my second tutorial series finished this week and the next two already mapped out are for Corona. The Outlaw IDE works for Moai and Corona, but the new features coming will be focused (at least at first) almost entirely on Corona. And I’ve just taken over the Lime tile engine from Glitch Games and am hoping to kick out v4 of that after the first of the year.

It sucks when high-profile (and much-loved) people like Peach leave. Especially when it’s obviously on bad terms. She’ll be missed tremendously. But just because someone leaves and says, “You suck!” as they walk out the door doesn’t actually mean that you suck. (Not saying Peach said that, just taking a little literary license  )

It’s possible Walter has bowed to the wishes of the VCs and is actually sacrificing goats in the office and other horrible things. But probably not.

If you’re really worried there are other SDKs available that will allow you to make cool games and apps – but I still think Corona SDK offers the best “bang for buck” ratio. I don’t think you should be worried that a falling out between an employer and employee signals anything dire.

I agree 100% with what Jay has said above.

It’s unfortunate when people who have been around for a long time decide to leave, but as I see it, when a company like CoronaLabs start to grow rapidly things change. With those changes there will be conflicts of interest in one way or another and you’ll see people leaving.

I was also having thoughts about changing platforms earlier this year, and I looked at many of them: Moai, Marmalade, Appcelerator and MoSync. Even though all of these platforms have their strengths, I always came back to the fact that coding with Corona is more fun, and I can get things done more quickly.
At the end of the day, that’s what has kept me in the Corona camp, and I believe that with every new release Corona is becoming stronger and stronger as a development tool.
[import]uid: 70847 topic_id: 33978 reply_id: 135095[/import]

Because Corona is a small team and the developers post on here under their own name, we get to know them by name. So if any leave we start to wonder why.

If all the staff posted under a single staff account, so we never know anyone on first name terms etc… someone leaving wouldn’t get talked about in the forums so much.

For instance when Carlos left, I never really knew who he was, as am new to Corona I presume I missed most of his posts on the forum.

I have been using Corona since Feb and I think it has grown much stronger in my time using it.

Same thing happened with Infinity Ward (COD developers), they had one guy who was the public part of the company. Unfortunately for them he used his personal twitter account for promoting them. When he left he took his twitter account with him (and all his followers) and obviously posted on it about leaving etc…

Now if he was using the Infinity Ward twitter account all along, him leaving and someone else taking over would have hardly been noticed.

What really sucks is this is the 2nd time good Corona tutorials have been removed from LearningCorona.com.

Click on any of Peach’s tutorials and it says

As of today, Monday 10th December 2012, I am no longer a part of Corona Labs.

Techority now resides at http://base.techority.com/ - you will find all new posts located there.

If you scroll down on the Learning Corona site, you will see that Rafael Hernandez’s tutorials are gone too.

It’s tough finding good tutorials on Corona and the lack of good training is another factor. I guess if you see a site with tutorials, grab them before they are gone! [import]uid: 141560 topic_id: 33978 reply_id: 135126[/import]

TBF - Rafael Hernandez took down his videos because he’s now put them onto a DVD and is charging for them - fair enough.

IMHO would be nice to add more subscription options like:

3 months subscription to test production environment for i do not know 79$?, then 12,18,24 etc

then get configurable set of API, now we have just Corona for andoid / ios and we have enterprise and we will have cloud. But there are some API (could be plugins) that would be needed / not needed for someone. This would decrease cost for start up if somebody does not need box2D to all his users etc.

also would be nice to create simple gifting ala tapjoy system that would allow to give gifts to developers (additional weeks of Corona SDK subscription free of charge) for particular actions that spread good news about SDK itself on social media etc.

We should not be worried about future of CoronaSDK. We should add value to it and it will grow. This could be win-win scenario.

The main problem (if you ignore the people who supported the community and were really great at that and just focus on the Corona platform itself) is that after so much time there’s no integration of more monetizing options. In this market where freemium model takes the lead it’s essential for interactive ads like videos (tapjoy should’ve been implemented long time ago) to be available as an alternative to in app purchases.

Just displaying some ads (I won’t comment on the little options here) is not enough to really be able to have a working business solution. After all we’re not here to make games just for fun.

Also not having implemented in app purchases for all market places is as bad as the lack of implementation for alternatives to them.

All these wonderful apis, functionality, easy to develop environment are in vain if the monetizing options are not implemented at its best. The only solution is to go enterprise, but I think that’s the idea why we came to Corona and not native right? [import]uid: 70003 topic_id: 33978 reply_id: 135131[/import]

@beckslash, great point of view!

They couldn’t do a 3 month plan cause then ppl would only buy that plan and use the free version the rest of the year. [import]uid: 7911 topic_id: 33978 reply_id: 135136[/import]

Hey everyone. When you get a chance, please take a look at this blog post Walter just put up.

http://www.coronalabs.com/blog/2012/12/14/betting-on-facts/

Thanks,

David [import]uid: 10668 topic_id: 33978 reply_id: 135168[/import]

sorry where but is nothing written why choose Corona over others. Exactly same post can be written for Moai, Gideros even for Love 2D with their aspects.

IMHO those are KPI to chose SDK

  • API features / why better, faster, simpler then others
  • SDK price / why more cost effective including time to design, develop, test
  • product support / why better support, community, docs, daily builds etc
  • company roadmap / why far ahead then others in areas like… now Cloud and Game Minion it just rocks

Still no good monetization options would be good to tell something what to use as a workaround instead of just silence. Even Apple said “our maps sucks, please use google maps instead but we have 100 of other cool features that google does not have”.

my 2 cents [import]uid: 111283 topic_id: 33978 reply_id: 135170[/import]

Bladko, I don’t believe that blog post was written for someone who’s trying to decide which framework to use – it was written for those people who have already chosen Corona SDK and are wondering if things are “shaky” because of high-profile people leaving, etc.

Jay [import]uid: 9440 topic_id: 33978 reply_id: 135171[/import]

yes some high profile ppl have left but we survived carlos leaving. i dont see any problem with peach leaving although she was a big help on the forums for a lot of ppl i think rob is a good choice for a replacement. [import]uid: 7911 topic_id: 33978 reply_id: 135172[/import]

I appreciate the replies here… don’t get me wrong - I WANT to stay with Corona, but I know how “dog eat dog” the Internet is and how a company can be at the top one day and gone the next (Zynga, for instance).

At least Corona uses Lua, so if you learn Lua it’s not a total waste.

Losing Peach really sucks though… she was very helpful and provided a really positive environment here. [import]uid: 141560 topic_id: 33978 reply_id: 135214[/import]

Well said Jay!
I feel very confident in where Corona Labs is headed. As Walter said in his blog, Corona Labs is stronger now than ever. It was sad to see Peach leave in such a publicly dissatisfied way, but it hasn’t impacted my opinion or faith in Walter and the rest of the gang at Corona Labs.

As to tutorials and training, the new weekly tutorials have been a nice edition.
On training, I know that Jay has just finished a nice course for learning to make apps. I am teaching a college course for beginners next semester and working on an online certificate course as well.
Plus there are now 3 books (4 by early next year… assuming I get busy writing over the holidays) and a DVD tutorials series available. Additionally, colleges and high schools are adding courses all over the world (with many of them are using one of my textbooks).

I have will have a lot of new material available early next year with the publication of my next textbook. If you have any requests for specific topics or tutorials, I’ll be happy to see what I can do. [import]uid: 34131 topic_id: 33978 reply_id: 135220[/import]
