Not impressed with corona sdk beginner rants

Your experience with Corona is based on your own perseverance and determination. I started with Corona last year, having not touched programming in over 10 years. Those two traits along with the uber helpful Corona community and the fact that the framework is pretty easy to grasp, got me through.

I’m usually a sit-on-the-fence kinda guy and like to see the argument from both sides, but I whole heartedly disagree with this rant.

Corona gives you enough substance to get stuck into it (although I’d actually like a bit more now), but is easy enough to really get going - plus look at the likes of Robert Nay, it’s getting kids (no offence intended) interested in programming and that can only be a good thing.

I hang around these forums a fair bit, but I don’t recall ever really seeing you around, asking questions, etc… [import]uid: 33275 topic_id: 29625 reply_id: 119090[/import]

I typed it into the forum last night, straight out my head, pretty much, To see it running you would need corona sdk installed and (as I described) open the main.lua file to see it in action. The code posted was Lua which would be compiled (in that magical process) by Corona.

The tutorials you posted are a good starting place, so is the lua book,

Hate to say it though, this is starting to get rather tedious? You have to make some decisions:

  1. Is learning to code what I need to do to make what I want to make?
  2. Is Corona/Lua the best tool for the job

If it is, then YES you will have to learn it

Read the Lua book, then you can easily follow the code in what are VERY simple tutorials abundant on the web, it may seem like a steep and perhaps unnecessary course of action, depending on your ambitions and app deliverables. If so, look at Game Creator, Game Salad, Flash?

Good Luck  [import]uid: 51222 topic_id: 29625 reply_id: 119091[/import]

Best of luck - and remember there’s plenty of people around here that will help you out. [import]uid: 33275 topic_id: 29625 reply_id: 119103[/import]

Ok great thanks sorry for it getting tedious I understand what you mean

I’m going to start with the tutorials http://developer.coronalabs.com/content/getting-started-corona-game-edition then the book by fernadez http://www.packtpub.com/corona-game-development-for-ios-android-beginners-guide/book then the book you suggested in your link here
http://www.lua.org/pil/

Then use third party tools just for assistance like gumbo. http://developer.coronalabs.com/forum/2011/01/25/gumbo-corona-level-design-tool?page=2 by then it wii make sense to me what gumbo is actually for in my mind as I don’t understand it yet but after the following tutorials and books above im sure it will indeed only a matter of time I will

thanks guys thank you very much

This forum is really dedicated to helping and the users are sure compassionate that’s what I have learned many thanks this is defiantly a top forum with best guidance I have seen in a long time

A great and well paced tutorial to get the basics of programming is CS101 at www.udacity.com

It focuses on the Phython language and it very interactive.

Even though its not Lua, it focuses on the bare basics you need to know to get into Lua.

I used it a couple months ago and it have given me a great headstart in lua, after I completed it I jumped straight into Michelle Fernadez’ book. [import]uid: 62706 topic_id: 29625 reply_id: 119107[/import]

@ codeacademy Hi i didn’t see (maybe I missed it) but their are also new Webinars ‘Introduction to Corona’ where you can actually meet and interact with the Corona developers over the world wide web, I think it’s something like Skype and you can ask them all the question you can ever thank of plus many many more.

Im not sure what time of the day or of the week these webinars are but I think you should definately check them out it sounds right up your alley because you are very inquisitive and you can tell them your feeling and frustrations and what they should do to make your experience more comfortable and easier

You need to go onto twitter and access #coronalabs and follow them they will post when you go on to Corona for Newbies’'internet where you can goto the time and the place. This way you can have live video of intro! [import]uid: 75779 topic_id: 29625 reply_id: 119258[/import]
