I had the same problem with an app of mine a little over a year back. I just changed the name back them. It also contained the word Memory in the title.
I had heard that Apple were talking about rejecting apps with the word Memory in the title, but this was shortly after our ‘MemoryMaster’ app was accepted so guess we were lucky. It does indeed seem ludicrous!
I have heard about this copyright issue around a year ago, too. But I did not think that Apple would reject an app just because of this reason. Seems a little bit crazy. You could talk to an Apple employee and ask specifically why this name is not allowed.

Memory is owned by a company in Germany. Just remove from sale in Germany. Its always worth while doing a trademark check. On this occasion it seems a little unfair that a non English speaking country has a trademark for a common English word but at least they only own it in Germany
The whole issue of copyright infringement with Apple is a FARCE (yes, that was a shout!)
Disney characters aren’t allowed. Neither are Harry Potter characters nor Star Wars characters - yet it’s a total lottery as to whether Apple will accept or reject.

These companies have trademarked these characters and do not want anyone else to make profit of them. It is their right to do so. And this is not because of Apple. If they see a “Star Wars Info” app on Google for example, they have the rights to shut it down.
Having a copyright on a word is a joke.

Apologies for not being clearer - my gripe is that Apple should reject all apps with infringement - not arbitrarily accept those apps that do infringe.

Well okay, having a copyright on a simple word like “Memory” is stupid but I believe that this is a special scenario due to Ravensburger selling this game for around 50 years. Some things become brands over time

Some people accept your apps, some don´t. Sometimes you just have to be lucky with the approval process.
I could accept that you can’t call your game exactly “Memory” (although that is stupid IMO), but rejecting because you have the word “memory” inside your game name is ridiculous.
I have searched a little bit around the web and got some interesting results for this topic. It seems like that the name “Memory” has been explicitly trademarked for all Apple apps/games by Apple and Ravensburger. This is a special agreement between Apple and Ravensburger…
I am sorry for you facing this issue right now, I would try to find another name probably. Even big and popular games in the world-wide AppStores had to change their names… I don´t think anyone here can do something against this.
I saw a game called “Memory*” and “Memory.”.
I will try with “Best Memory! 4 Kids”.

Just remove from sale in Germany.
To be honest although annoying (I had the same experience), they are protecting their trademark name in Germany where it is a household name bit like Monopoly. They only have this in Germany so you can sell anywhere else. You can easily check up on trademarks and when you find out the details you can either argue your case or remove from sale in that country which is the easiest way as you do not need to change graphics, icons etc
What with Disney characters etc, no one can surely expect to use these freely without permission and you can’t really complain at that either. They created the characters so they own them unlike words.
