Say Good-bye to "Doodle Dash!" Thanks to PlayFirst, Inc.

Hi Jon,
It looks nice and plays nice on the phone. I will write a review on the blog, but thought I’d provide some feedback to you via this forum.

  1. Overall, the game look amazing.
  2. The settings screen is really well put together
  3. The scrolling is smooth

but…
The music loop ends at a point where you can feel it start with a small jarr, you might want to trim the loop so that it seems seamless
The game responsiveness (in my opinion) is a bit less responsive as compared to the older version.

Overall, it is fun and I liked it. Maybe as I play more, I will be able to tell you more.

cheers,

Thanks for the feedback!

The “not as responsive as Doodle Dash” might be due to the fact that the default tilt sensitivity has been tuned down a little bit, but the options screen provides 5 different options to choose from now, one of which should satisfy just about everyone.

If that’s not it, just give it a few rounds and you’ll get used to it. If you’re not coming from Doodle Dash! you won’t even notice.

Thanks again for the feedback everyone! Keep it coming!

Also, if you’ve downloaded it, I ask that you please leave a rating/review in the iTunes app store. Thanks a lot! [import]uid: 7849 topic_id: 3317 reply_id: 12859[/import]

Small update, FYI… The sales picked right back up when I put it back on sale, so I was curious where it was at in the search rankings.

Biffy typed in “tilt” in the app store and to our surprise, Tilt Monster is #14 (first page) for that search term!

I don’t have any data to support this, but I’d assume that’s a good term for those looking for games considering huge hits like “Tilt to Live” and other games. Just thought I’d share that here. Thanks again for your feedback everyone.

Oh, and if you didn’t get a chance to try the game out, let me know and I’ll give you a promo code! (but you gotta leave a review in the app store, not asking for a good one, but a review nonetheless) [import]uid: 7849 topic_id: 3317 reply_id: 12860[/import]

Jon,

Nice job on Tilt Monster! I’m glad you were able to turn it around after PlayFirst’s absurd legal gripe.

One thing I would definitely add in a future version: a way to get back hearts! I’ve only played the game for a short time, so maybe there is a way to regain life that I haven’t yet realized… regardless I found it frustrating that I’d lose a heart early, then be panicking about hitting one more enemy and it’s “game over”. It’s like playing a round of the classic Super Mario Brothers and having no growth mushrooms, running little Mario around being terrified of even the smallest goomba. :slight_smile:

It’s your game and you’re the designer, but that’s my two cents. It would be nice if hearts popped up just occasionally… not too often… giving players a chance to regain a life point. Or maybe just increase the heart container from 2 to 3.

Great job though, I hope it sells well! The more Corona apps out there, the better.

@IgnisDesign: The game was originally meant to be a fast paced, quick-in, quick-out style of play which is why I went with the double-hit game over (unless you hit a bomb); however, one of the pickups you unlock at a specific score threshold is a heart, so yes, there is currently a way to get a lost heart back, but not at first.

Thanks for the feedback Brent (and all others as well), if you don’t mind and have a spare moment, please leave a rating/review in the app store, thanks a lot! [import]uid: 7849 topic_id: 3317 reply_id: 12892[/import]

@jonbeebe,
I wanted to ask, on the blog here in corona, it was mentioned that you had this game downloaded more than 160,000 times…are those sales? are you rich now? have u quit your job and only dedicate to make games?

BTW, I downloaded your game and left a review; as others have mentioned, the only thing I kinda hate is having only 2 hearts…but I think that’s where the challenge and fun of the game is :wink:

Cheers!

RD [import]uid: 7856 topic_id: 3317 reply_id: 12898[/import]

Hi Rdcube,

Nope not rich, lol, but yes those were sales of the game.

I quit my job in 2009 to work full-time online but have since focused all my efforts on mobile game development since the release of Doodle Dash (now Tilt Monster).

Thanks for the feedback! Seems a lot of people want an extra heart. You’ve got the concept right though, it was meant to make sure games kept players “on their toes”. It also is much more rewarding when you are able to last longer in a round, thus inspiring players to keep playing “just one more” … I might change it to 3 stars in the future, or find a way to incorporate both modes.

Thanks again for your questions, input, and feedback!

Take care,

Jonathan, being a new IOS developer I read your story with interest and felt bad for what you had to go through. Wanted to check your game out and to my amazement came across at least 6 or 7 apps that have Dash in their names. What gives??? Double standards? So what is your app called now? Best of luck with this issue. [import]uid: 11904 topic_id: 3317 reply_id: 12926[/import]

@ksan: The new name is “Tilt Monster” and just went live in the app store the other day. So far it’s going really great (9,400+ people updated their app just yesterday!).

You can view the app, screenshots, and info here:

Sounds great! Would love a promo code. Thanks for the offer. Currently living overseas but still use my US Apple Store account so my review (positive no doubt) would be relevant I am sure. Cheers.

Congratulations on your successful relaunch as well. [import]uid: 11904 topic_id: 3317 reply_id: 12935[/import]

Thanks. Went to the App Store only to realize I don’t even know how to use the promo code… D’oh. Decided to buy it anyways. My 10 year old checking it out now. It looked great on first pass! Great job. [import]uid: 11904 topic_id: 3317 reply_id: 12937[/import]

@ksan: Thanks! When you get a chance, please leave a rating/review in the app store.

For future reference, to redeem a promo code, go to the “App Store” app, at the bottom click ‘Featured’ (or whatever the first tab is). Scroll ALL the way down and click ‘Redeem’.

Thanks again! [import]uid: 7849 topic_id: 3317 reply_id: 12938[/import]

@jonbeebe…nice to know and good luck on more sales :wink: [import]uid: 7856 topic_id: 3317 reply_id: 12968[/import]

Jon,

I noticed in “Tilt Monster” that there’s no automatic orientation flip, as in the screen orientation rotating 180 degrees if the user flips the device around (thus keeping the screen horizontally upwards). Is this true? I’m mostly curious because I recall from the GameSalad forums, many months ago, that Apple was really strict about this… outright rejecting apps that didn’t utilize an orientation flip… but obviously Apple didn’t reject Tilt Monster. What’s the verdict? I’d rather not include orientation Event Listeners (i.e. in the Ansca “Fishies” example) if it’s not really necessary anymore. After all, more listeners = more memory being used, generally speaking.
[import]uid: 9747 topic_id: 3317 reply_id: 13031[/import]

No need for listeners. Just add the supported orientations in your build.settings file. Here’s the relevant part in mine:

settings = {
orientation = {
default = “landscapeRight”,
supported = { “landscapeLeft”, “landscapeRight” },
}, [import]uid: 10835 topic_id: 3317 reply_id: 13032[/import]

@IgnisDesign: I’ve submitted two apps that don’t utilize the screen orientation flip thing, and several updates to both and have never had a problem. I think they are most strict about iPad apps when it comes to orientation.

@IgnacioIturra: Is that really all it takes to utilize orientation flipping? [import]uid: 7849 topic_id: 3317 reply_id: 13034[/import]

Mmmm yes. [import]uid: 10835 topic_id: 3317 reply_id: 13036[/import]

Awesome! Thanks Ignacio, I’ll add that (and skip the “listeners” method, as shown in the Ansca Fishies code). [import]uid: 9747 topic_id: 3317 reply_id: 13037[/import]

The samples are honestly terrible. Some just flat out don’t work. I’m trying to get the twitter one to work and it’s useless in both my ipad and iphone 4. [import]uid: 10835 topic_id: 3317 reply_id: 13038[/import]
