Switching From GameSalad

Ok, so I’ve patiently watched this play out, and the main reason to use Corona over Game Salad is that the founders are extremely cool. Ok, that’s enough to keep me using Corona! Oh, and all the other items mentioned above are a definite plus too!

Works for me! Now, I’ve gotta get coding… [import]uid: 64538 topic_id: 14160 reply_id: 57107[/import]

Glad to hear it. I hope you will enjoy our cool founders … and all that other “stuff”

One things I saw the other night when GS presented at our local Mobile Monday meeting here in Austin, was the ability to take the game you’ve developed and deploy it as a game (ala HTML5) within a web browser. Any thoughts to adding this sort of functionality to Corona? [import]uid: 64538 topic_id: 14160 reply_id: 57270[/import]

I’m making the switch, 11 mths after GS Direct made me buy a corona license :). Oh well, at least I had access to the subscriber only forums during that time :).

GS has been great for me, it allowed me to build and release my game A Long Way Home, among others, but its time for a change. I want to learn something new, and I need the performance improvements for my new game.

I’m looking forward to going through your tutorials peach, they look awesome.

@jonmulcahy

As you probably know, I recently took the move here too. Love it! Glad to see some GameSalad members finally moving on to advance there skills. learningcorona.com helped me a bunch, but there’s a book on Corona which taught me the basics of what I know, which could really help you out (http://www.burtonsmediagroup.com/books/mobile-app-development-with-corona-getting-started)

Anyway, I hope you enjoy Corona as much as I do!

Welcoem @jonmulcahy @matthewredler and @gbailey !

as for HTLM5, we alrea always looking at new platforms (just like how we did with webOS) and that’s not a secret, but until we figure out a way that we you can monetize on the platform, then it is when it becomes feasible. I have yet to see people making money off HTML5 based games, even on the platform you suggested. Anyhow, without having to think too much about it, we are always looking and exploring new platforms. (see atg.anscamobile.com as well).

Also, see http://blog.anscamobile.com/2011/08/a-few-words-from-us-regarding-webos/

ps: the founders are really cool … i got to meet one of the guys the other day… [import]uid: 24 topic_id: 14160 reply_id: 57286[/import]

Hello Jon!

I’m very happy to see you here and I do hope you’ll find my tutorials enjoyable; the Corona For Newbies mini series has been really well received and gives a nice, gentle intro into the basics. (Including physics basics in part 4.)

I also recall your app, A Long Way Home, it was most enjoyable

I’m sure you’ll fit in great here - and really enjoy the lack of load times. (That was the first thing that really blew my mind, after the cool founders, of course.)

I’m frustrated with how many game sdk’s there are out there and don’t want to waste time learning one only to find out it sucks.

What other SDK’s has everyone tried out there? Do you think Corona is the best? [import]uid: 141560 topic_id: 14160 reply_id: 100451[/import]

Game salad (piece of crap imo)
unity 3d pro --very very good, but much slower to develop on.
Cocos2d - slowwwww to develop on, but box2d *seems* to behave more and appears to give you more exposure to Box2d API. Don’t quote me on that, I’m more or less still new.

and for downright death incarnate slow. You can always go native and go pure obj C + Xcode. That was the most frustrating experience in my life…ugh (shivers).

Keep in mind this is from a perspective of a guy who didn’t program AT ALL back in June 2011. I barely knew what a “function” was then. So for me to go spend a few weeks with each framework was insane for me. I made great progress on Unity3d, but since I wanted a 2d game, the 2d under 3d performance isn’t as good. I made my game on both platforms just to compare, Corona SDK got me closer to 60 fps, vs 33 on Unity. I think it has something to do with the 3d space and there is more calculations going on vs a 2d plane. I don’t know, I just pulled that theory out of my butt

Ease of use was Game Salad, but that performance was CRAP. What’s funny though is the time it took me to learn GS, I built a small mini game in Corona in the same amount of time, so I figured I stick with that.

Corona SDK FTW!!

Thanks for your input. There are so many choices it seems… I have yet to find a good non biased article comparing all of the sdk’s.

I think so far my gut says Corona. [import]uid: 141560 topic_id: 14160 reply_id: 100458[/import]

I think finding an “unbiased” opinion on anything is impossible. Everyone is influenced by something either directly or indirectly and a lot of times they are not even aware of it.
I think what works out best for the purpose of an SDK search is use a small project and code that project in each sdk using the same design and see which one comes out on top for you. Then, weigh out the limitations of each SDK and what that is worth to you.

That is what I learned the hard way, since i’m still so damn new to programming I stumble across a lot of stuff and think “oh that will totally work” and then realize “Someone slap me now I was completely wrong” lol.

Story of my life!

Try out Corona SDK, you’ll be amazed how fast you can deploy a game. I think the initial stuff with display objects and all that stuff is easy. It’s all the “back end” stuff that gets insane like scores, saving levels, leader boards and some database stuff. Luckily, Peach Pellen has an awesome website I learned a ton from on those things I mentioned at techority.com. She has an ego class, which is a lua module you can use to save and load data from, such as highscores, level lock unlock etc etc. Whatever you want!

Hmm, I have ranted on haven’t I? Ok, done. Enjoy, eat ice cream, dance around in a speedo, whatever makes you happy…eh lol.

I’d +1 most of what Nick said in post #28.

RE unbiased, it’s hard to find and may not really exist - but as Nick said everyone is influenced by something.

In my case I think Corona is the best, I’m influenced by the fact that I have tried other SDKs and well, did not enjoy them. (Unity was cool for 3D but not my thing.)

I know the staff tag makes me appear more biased than others but I joined the team after falling in love with the product, so I guess that could also be considered a testament to its greatness  [import]uid: 52491 topic_id: 14160 reply_id: 100510[/import]
