What is Default Splash Screen?

I won’t sugarcoat things up. I chose corona for a year now, making my personal/commercial apps. I can admit, I wasn’t that lucky when it comes to generating revenue but it’s kinda accomplishing to create your own app when it looks really PROFESSIONAL without any splash screen involve.

I just want to be true to myself that I am patronizing this over other products despite its limited 2D platform capabilities merely because it will let you build a DECENT app (without a bargain splash screen) that can be commercially published giving you an uplifting notion as a legitimate indie developer with a comprehensive product.

Corona used to be a pro-developer tool. Back when ads monetization plugins are only limited to admob, flurry, revmob and vungle. Back when the www.coronalabs.com color scheme used to be plain white, orange and dark gray. Now, I can see that we even have Corona Ads, a self-revenue generating plugin for corona, plus the website itself is more stimulating than facebook.

Corona is growing. I can’t see any further reasons why there’s a need for this movement to be implemented that will force FREE users like me to pay $99 to get back a FREE feature that we used to have. It is possible that most of your SDK developers will think twice before putting their FREE apps in appstores since these will really look generic. Or worse, they won’t develop at all.

Plus, it will promote Corona so it will attract more developers and aspiring ones which is good for your business. Hopefully they won’t choose FREE SDK as well or it will just be a repetitive habit. How many of them do you think will gamble for $99/year when pioneer SDK users didn’t even tried to dare. Everyone can be a developer now! And if everyone is a developer, then no one would be.

Lastly, for those who think that $99/year is really a rip-off compared to what we can get, please be my guest. Feel free to pay for mine!  :D I am not hypocrite to admit that I am yet to afford it.

Hi developers!

I’m not agree with the splash screen movement Corona made recently.

It’s not about pay or not $ 99/year (something hard for some indie developers or beginners). It’s about the way this payment has been almost imposed through something that looks like a kidnaping. Also, the way it has been announced as a feature to help developers to make business in the Corona Marketplace.

Without a doubt, Not a smart movement.

I think the best promotion for Corona is coming from its own developers not from people playing our games. I started using Corona because a developer pal advise, not after watching the logo anywhere.

Anyway, thanks for this great SDK! … Remove the Splash Screen, please!

We haven’t the choice to pay it. Can you juste allow us to stay a the last version where the splash screen doesn’t exist

Hi all,

I think it a fair deal that for 100$ you can get rid off Corona’s splash screen. But I’m also willing to show users that our app is build with Corona.

But currently the Corona splash screen just looks bad:

Please check this video and notice the blue rectangle (iPhone 6, iOS9, Corona 2016.2949): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNdZWRX0qzA&feature=youtu.be

Also - as stated before - there should be dark and light versions of the slash screen

I would suggest getting the latest daily build and see if that cures the blue border issue.

Rob

I do understand the reasons behind the splash screen sponsoring. But I am having a few issues with it.

I needed to fix a bug in an already released app. Quite in a hurry I fixed it, tested it briefly and uploaded the update to the play store. I had to hear from my client that he saw this splash screen. That was not my best moment. If you make a build, you should get a warning stating that the default splash screen is used.

I would prefer to use paypal instead of my creditcard when purchasing a plugin.

Some feature suggestions:

I would love to be able to specify different images for different orientations. And of course to use the “@#x” naming convention to let it automatically select the best suitable image for the resolution.

Question:

Do I still need to add a Default-568h.png file to the project’s root in order to support tall resolution?

$99 is a little much for a forced feature. You guys should have done $29 for this and $20 for something else and so on. More small paid options is proven to generate more revenue. I’m just starting a new app using Corona. Knowing I have to pay the $99 for such a silly feature has me putting this project on hold.

Who knows what you’ll hit us with next. Maybe $500 per build?

It’s not a feature at all. I still don’t understand why Corona staff insisted on telling that. It’s a basic functionality that you can do with your asset file(jpeg, png etc.) and a timer. You don’t need a plugin for that. Actually, it’s something like “Remove Ads” IAP that we see in most casual games.

For your concern, you shouldn’t put your project on hold if the splash screen is the only thing you worry about. Saying this as a developer and a player, noone cares about splash screens at all. None of your players would care if the game is made with Corona, Unity or Unreal.

Lastly, for the Corona Staff: This topic seems to be reviving occasionally because you are not clear and upfront about the future. I know you have reasons(“people will take it as a promise” etc.) but I still suggest sharing a roadmap to end this once and for all.

Interested to hear as well.

Hi, this is the most ridiculous decision I have ever seen.

How do they can change the rules from day by day?

So, tomorrow they say: now all the apps will be named “App created by Corona” unless you pay $99/year for the Custom App Name Control Plugin". Then: all the apps will be have the Corona Icon unless you pay $99/year for the Custom App Icon Control Plugin.

Seriously, this doesn’t make sense. I have been working with Corona for many years and now I want to update some already submitted apps and I find this stupid issue.

If I want to do it, I will have to pay for the Admob plugin $199, Splash plugin $99, Charboost plugin $199 and TTS plugin $25 (third party plugin).

I used to pay $99/year for the Pro license, and I thought it was fair to support Corona, but this is extremely excessive and it doesn’t look well.

Ok, I will leave the apps as currently, and I will move to another game development framework.

Thanks Corona!

they’ve apparently already built in the support, its presence revealed by this exception::

Before the whining gets started, ZERO end users care about a “powered with” kind of splash screen. ZERO.

It will give Corona some (needed) exposure to other game devs and normal end-user people will just ignore it.

I think a splash screen is a good idea. The user is getting an amazing platform for free.

And it is really cheap to get rid of if you don´t or your client doesn’t like it

I agree with the +1’s here.

I think it’s great that Corona can potentially generate some more revenue.

Companies don’t run on fumes people, remember that.

Would splash screens be added to corona’s latest daily builds but not from 2015 builds or would they be able to do it to older versions also?

I don’t think anyone would mind the splash screen because nearly all engines do this with their free tier and I think $99 / year is very reasonable price.

Hopefully this is not true. I wouldn’t mind paying $99/year to support Corona if some of their ads plugins like FAN and Admob get updated to the latest version with native ads support and no rev share.  Not just to remove the splash screen,  That would be following what Unity did years ago.  Corona used to proclaim their free tier is truly “free” unlike Unity.

Gosh you scared me. I thought this was a new topic. I like the splash screen.
