one thing i’ve noticed is that scrolling through files is really jerky - and my CPU spikes into the 90’s. I drag the window onto my hdmi connected non retina monitor and it’s smooth as silk. annoying but way better than blurry text

That is extremely bizarre. So when you scroll on a retina monitor it is jerky but when you move it to an external monitor it scrolls fine? That has to be a Java bug. We hope that gets fixed when they release update 40 coming in August. And are you saying that the text appears sharper on a non-retina screen than a retina screen?

Yes it does sound like a java bug. Doing some digging, it looks identical to this:
https://netbeans.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=215141#c88
no the text is definitely sharper on the retina screen, but frustrating to use because of the jerkiness.
Hello Derek,
Yes this statement seems to be spot on:
I would also note, however, that performance is absolutely awful when using
this build on a retina-display, compared to the Apple-supplied Java 6 running
on the same display. Using the 7u40 build on a non-retina secondary display,
performance is fine, its just problematic when moving the Netbeans window to
the retina display.
It is good news that they are at least taking Mac users seriously by fixing the retina as well as other bugs. We hope by the time Java 7u40 is release everything will be at least usable. We are now fairly certain that most Glider performance issues on Mac are possibly related to the currently slow/buggy graphics rendering pipeline in Java 7. All we can do in this regard is wait for them to fix the problems.

That would be great, I hate not being able to use Glider 1.9 yet.

Retina support in Oracle JDK 1.7.0_40 and above
http://bulenkov.com/2013/06/23/retina-support-in-oracle-jdk-1-7/
Please try this version:
http://www.mydevelopersgames.com/Lua%20Glider%20InstallerJ7u40Dev.dmg
And let us know if the fonts are retina sharp. That version of Glider uses a dev build of Java 7 with many mac specific bugs fixed.

Just tried it out.
Fonts are not blurry any more.
yup, its now working fine for me. No more blurry text!!!
Hello Everyone,
Sounds great! Looks like the java experience for Mac is improving. By the time they release it for good it can only get better. Please let us know if anything strange occurs. We tested it as much as we could on our Macs but things always work great on the dev machine.

awesome - works for me too!
Hello Everyone,
Just checking in to see if anyone is having issues with the java 7 dev version. Please let us know about anything

I haven’t had any issues with it so far. Sometimes when time machine does its backup Glider hangs and says its using like 200%+ but I’ve been shrugging it off.
Hello Chevol,
Thanks for the report. How often does this problem occur? Never tested it with time machine before, that is def. a combination worth testing.
