android tablet

so I go into bestbuy to buy an android tablet and after 30 min of the showing me the htc flyer with the pen getting me interested I decide ok yes I want one then they say well it’s on back order right now no bestbuys have them and you can’t get them online, I ask then why did you waste my time teasing me with something I can’t buy and if I order you can’t tell me if or when I would get it. will you sell me the display, no we can’t sale it until they discontinue it, well sounds like to me it is discontinued [import]uid: 7911 topic_id: 17740 reply_id: 317740[/import]

OfficeMax here in the Bay Area has 7" Samgsung Galaxy tablets for under $100. Pretty cheap yet popular Android tablet.

No way can an Office Max have a Samsung Galaxy Tab for only $100. The cheapest tablet right now with Android is the Kindle Fire for $200. If you could find me a tablet for under a $100 hook me up with the store and I’ll go there and buy once right now.

actually you can get one for $30 from att if you do a contract

Who wants a contract??? Especially for a tablet -_- [import]uid: 29181 topic_id: 17740 reply_id: 67654[/import]

David, if that isn’t a typo I’d suggest you get on eBay and start selling  [import]uid: 52491 topic_id: 17740 reply_id: 67674[/import]

David may be referring to the 3g version, which is only on discount with a service contract. [import]uid: 49447 topic_id: 17740 reply_id: 67716[/import]

1SaleADay.com has several tablets on sale right now.

My Pref being the Nook for 149.

I purchased one like 2 or 3 months ago from them and have not had any troubles with it.

I think it will be good to use to test with, when I get my apps ready for the nook.

Also there is a simple Jail break for it on an SD card you can pick up ( without jail breaking it ) you just pop in reboot and you got android 3.x tablet. Take card out reboot - you back to normal nook.

I gots to get me one of them cards like 35 bucks on amazon and the developers site.

Good luck to all.

yeah I’ve been trying to decide between then nook color, kindle fire, or then nook tablet, or an android tablet [import]uid: 7911 topic_id: 17740 reply_id: 67772[/import]

I really love my nook color, but make no mistake - it’s very underpowered compared to the other options out there. For example, the game I’m working on now runs much faster on my phone (EVO 4G, 1ghz cpu) than it does on the Nook Color (800Mhz cpu).

Even with overclocking the Nook (up to 1.3ghz) it still underperforms. [import]uid: 49447 topic_id: 17740 reply_id: 67777[/import]

so if I get nook and build for that performance wise I’d be good on other devices [import]uid: 7911 topic_id: 17740 reply_id: 67778[/import]

That’s exactly how I look at it! If it performs well on the Nook, you are probably good for other devices. [import]uid: 49447 topic_id: 17740 reply_id: 67779[/import]

BTW,

Went back to my local OfficeMax and the $99 Galaxy Tablet was only if you purchase a 2 year Sprint data plan.

:7(

The fine print was a type 6 font! No kidding.

figured it was either contract or typo [import]uid: 7911 topic_id: 17740 reply_id: 67996[/import]

That’s so dodgy, I hate places that do the really tiny print.

Either way, even at full non-contract price you get a much better deal than in Australia. We pay so much for tech >.

I have a kindle fire. I think it’s pretty sweet!

I also have an ipad2, and an ipad it is not. If you compare it to Ipad you will come away a little put off.

NO external volume buttons
NO hardware home button

Basically, if you are listening to a movie or music, or a game and suddenly you need to hit mute - YOU ARE IN FOR SOME FUN!

You have to bring up the settings menu, then sound then control the volume from there - it’s more of a problem if you are the type to rock out with your loudspeakers out. If you use headphones, well you can just rip them out of your ears if you want to pay attention to someone.
The home button issue, is minor. You can hit the screen and it will show up and then you hit the home button. A 2 step process - minor but slightly annoying.

The fluidity of scrolling through the amazon app store, your book shelf etc - CAN be a little jerky. Apple definitely has them beat on smoothness of the UI. The good thing is picking up a fire is like using a new OS, it’s so DIFFERENT from a typical android device it’s nearly something completely different.

The price however is crazy $200, full integration with Amazon, games run GREAT on it (load times are longer than ipad - using the universal benchmark ANGRY BIRDS lol).

My biggest complaint about android is market fragmentation / hardware fragmentation / everything fragmentation. I hope that maybe the fire will help this along. I’ve even thought about ONLY releasing on Amazons app store, and not doing the regular android market at all. I want the experience to be great across the board (especially with the physics, which are different from device to device ipad2 vs galaxy tab, droid x droid x2, 100+ other configurations!).
I guess I put some unecessary information in this post and ranted a bit, I apologize (no I don’t lol). It is what it is.
The kindle fire is great for the money, It’s small enough, yet large enough to be useful. I wish it had bluetooth (for music) and I wish it had a gyroscope - but I can live without those things…for a while.

One important item regarding the Kindle Fire… It’s damn heavy! For a 7" screen, it weights as much as my iPad 1.

I think a lot of people will go with the Fire, because of cost. In the end you will wish you had an iPad. (gyroscope, real buttons, more CPU, more memory, lighter, etc.)

I’ll probably break down and buy one for Android tablet testing.

thinking of going with fire
I bought the htc flyer a few days ago mainly cause I thought the pen was neat but after a few days decided its just a gimmick
one thing I don’t understand about android is they have a task manager for killing apps to free memory but what’s the reason for allowing you to be able to kill the os, touch screen, and other files that are needed for the device to run
now I’m new to android and don’t know if all androids allow this but the htc flyer did [import]uid: 7911 topic_id: 17740 reply_id: 69213[/import]
