Any other $99 HP Touchpad owners out there? Want to test Corona for webOS?

Just wondering if anybody else (like me) decided to take advantage of the HP Touchpad “fire sale” this weekend? I actually bought two. One for hacking and out of general curiosity, and a second to give to my Mom for web browsing and email.

Anyway, while I don’t expect Ansca to waste their time supporting an officially dead OS, I am wondering if there are enough of us out there who have webOS devices for them to release the software they used to build the app seen in Carlos’ last blog post? (http://blog.anscamobile.com/2011/08/a-few-words-from-us-regarding-webos/) Please +1 this forum thread if you’re in the same boat as me. Maybe if we’re lucky, we can convince Ansca to humor us with some webOS goodness. [import]uid: 27636 topic_id: 14167 reply_id: 314167[/import]

+1

I have a Palm Pre, Palm Pre 2 and a TouchPad(loaner program)
I currently have two games built for webOS and currently in the HP App Catalog.
Sales have been o.k. for not promoting.
I used GLBasic to build for webOS.

I hope HP keeps webOS alive and maybe sell to Samsung or another big company.
webOS is really good. [import]uid: 53445 topic_id: 14167 reply_id: 52123[/import]

Where can you buy them for $99 ?

Do they ship outside of the US ? [import]uid: 84637 topic_id: 14167 reply_id: 52124[/import]

@Millerszone: ditto for hoping that HP keeps webOS alive one way or the other. In the meantime, Microsoft is offering free WP7 phones, training, and dev tools to any published webOS developer. You should totally take advantage of the offer: http://www.zdnet.com/blog/cell-phones/webos-devs-microsoft-offers-free-phones-and-training-for-windows-phone-7/6386

@Danny: I purchased mine through my Staples corporate account rep (thanks to my day job as an office manager) - that was the easiest way to guarantee I got one, because they’re disappearing fast at $99. However, Staples.com still seems to have 32GB models for $149 as of now. And Staples.com may ship overseas. Good luck! [import]uid: 27636 topic_id: 14167 reply_id: 52126[/import]

Just don’t get your hopes up on a corona sdk for webOS.

we don’t even have build servers for it.

Fair enough, Carlos. Thanks for reading the thread, though! That right there speaks volumes. [import]uid: 27636 topic_id: 14167 reply_id: 52133[/import]

Before webOS I rather have OS X, HTML5, Windows and more features.

webOS seems likely to disappear sooner or later… for that I did not take the chance to try and get one, but major stores across Canada were giving it away for 99$ too. FutureShop went sold out within half an hour on their website.

I’ll go same way as for @Millerszone : Desktop build before webOS. [import]uid: 1058 topic_id: 14167 reply_id: 52167[/import]

I took advantage of it, to make some money

I bought 3 at one best buy, then bought 2 more. Then turned around and sold them. I made 550$ by charging $100 to $125 more than I bought them for.

Saving up money to buy a mac pro

It is interesting that HP just went berzerk and dropped webos quickly. I never used it before, but knew this was coming so made plans accordingly. I guess HP just didn’t want to go up against Apple anymore and threw in the towel?

Actually HP didn’t drop webOS, just the devices.

Email I received:

Dear webOS developer:

We have opened the next chapter for webOS, and we understand that you must have many questions. Yesterday we announced that we will focus on the future of webOS as a software platform but we will no longer be producing webOS devices. While this was a difficult decision, it’s one that will strengthen our ability to focus on further innovating with webOS as we forge our path forward. Throughout this journey, our developers will continue to be a vital part of the future of webOS.

We will continue to support, innovate and develop the webOS App Catalog. Our intent is to enhance our merchandising and presentation of your great products and to continue to build our webOS app ecosystem.

As many of you are aware, we are currently scheduled to hold many developer events around the world. We are planning to continue with these events, however, due to the recent announcements; the nature of them will change. These updates will be posted on our events registration site this coming week. We are eager to present to you the updated strategy for webOS and to hear your feedback.

Lastly, I wish to express our sincere appreciation for your ongoing support for webOS and the many teams responsible for it here at HP. This is a particularly dynamic time in the mobile industry and sometimes tough decisions need to be made about not only what to do, but also what not to do. This has been one of those times. Together with our great webOS developer community, we are confident that we will meet the challenges ahead and build momentum for optimal success.

We will be communicating with you frequently over the next few weeks and we look forward to hearing from you throughout this process.

Thanks for your support

It is indeed funny to note that people did not want to buy Touchpads, then suddenly HP drop the devices and everyone wants one, to the point that people are happy to even pay a premium, if that is the case, why did they not buy them from HP in the first place??

So the moral of the story is if enough traction is created, people will eventually want the product.

people… and their silliness

If any other Touchpad users are wanting to test out stuff, here is an article that I had written on running Linux, (compiled from various sources that confused me to bits)
