Anybody using this? Codea: coding in Lua directly on the iPad??

I just found this:

http://twolivesleft.com/Codea/

Coding directly in Lua on an ipad! Another COOL way to prototype apps while away from a PC/Mac!

Curious if someone bought this?

@Mo,

I bought this some time ago, but honestly I have not used this app since I bought it yet.

PS: But looks like promising and something fun. Also I saw yesterday one app (game) that claims to be coded/done “at all” using the Codea, so I believe it is growing.

PS2: That app is not so new, it used to be called Codify (I think) but has changed its name and by the time has been growing its users/community as well (I follow that some times).

Thanks Rodrigo! I am wondering if it is possible to build an app ready for the app store? (still using a mac for certificates…)

Anyway it looks very interesting even as a way to code in Lua on the go.

Thanks again Rodrigo.

@Mo,

Yes, I bought that specially to be “focused” on coding LUA and not concerning releasing or anything like that and also because at the time I bought the app it wasn`t saying anything about “release” for AppStore so by now as it has been growing they look like to be allowing some people to get into the Live Store using their app.

BTW, I think that`s good but I would not “change” coding on Mac by coding on iPad (Arrgh - lol). :wink:
Cheers mate,

I’ve had a play with it, it’s certainly good fun but really the each time I would end up thinking “It would be faster/easier/better if I were doing this in Corona” - then I’d go grab my Macbook Air :wink: [import]uid: 52491 topic_id: 25902 reply_id: 104836[/import]

@Peach,

I agree with you. :wink:

Also, I hate type on the iPad I do not know why, but I think that since I got the iPhone (was after my iPad) I forgot so much the iPad btw. :\
Cheers friends,

Ah! Ah! Don’t worry, I still LOVE Corona. I usually travel with my iPad and would enjoy play around with lua on it. Just to prototype games I have in my head. The long term solution will be to buy myself a Mac air but I need to first get rich with my app:)

Cheers guys.

Hehe don’t worry, I know Codea is very different to Corona and wouldn’t replace it for you guys.

@Rodrigo - like you my iPhone is used more than my iPad, though I got the iPad a few weeks after the iPhone. I just like the phone more. (And I also hate typing on the iPad.)

@Mo - I hope you can do that some day soon, I’m flying to Palo Alto to visit Ansca HQ this weekend and I’m so glad I have mine (11 inch) to use on the flight rather than an iPad or my older Macbook Pro, which was too heavy for my backpack to be a nice weight.

Have a safe trip!

I’ve had a bit of a play around with it - it’s pretty cool. Good IDE and documentation, and of course, it’s Lua. Again though, things are easier on a Mac with a proper keyboard, your graphics packages, Corona, multiple windows and more screen real estate.

Interestingly though, and to answer one of @LairdGames questions, it is now possible to build a project made in Codea ready for the AppStore. It’s done using the OpenSource Codea Runtime Library that’s available on GitHub. This was created and used by the devs to build and release Cargo-Bot, a game that they created solely using Codea on the iPad.

You obviously still need a Mac to build for the AppStore and an Apple Developer account.

You can read about it here [import]uid: 74503 topic_id: 25902 reply_id: 104937[/import]

@Peach - I wish you have an AMAZING travel my friend! GO TO BE HAPPY! :wink:

@iNSERT CODE - Nice info. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you all,

I tried it out too and I was like “nope, faster in corona”.

Macbook air’s are not powerful enough for me. I use cinema 4d prime. That alone will bring a machine to a crawl, I could only imagine the poor air being beaten up by it :slight_smile:

However, I have been thinking of getting an air for other things (like surfing around, corona development, etc. Maybe some illustrator/photoshop work if it’s not too intense).

I know a new refresh is coming, so I am waiting for the new ivy bridge (thats geek talk for a new cpu architecture, faster graphics etc) line to come out. They might go “air like” on the macbook pro as well and make it lighter.
Have a great trip to Ansca Peach.

May the MMFT9D be with you.
