Are Kindle builds not Android builds?

Planning on updating all my apps this weekend and dropping them on Amazon for sale on the Kindle. My question is: to reach all of Amazon’s customers, Kindle specific and other Android customers, should I create and submit two versions of the same app, Kindle specific and plain Android? Or will the one app, built using the Kindle build, work on other devices (assuming I don’t need any access the Kindle doesn’t support).

The “read phone state” issue is the first thing to come to mind. [import]uid: 64596 topic_id: 18237 reply_id: 318237[/import]

Correct. They are two different builds. That’s why the build to amazon fire kindle option.

There is no GPS, no phone, etc on Fire’s and future Nook support.

Thank you, Carlos, for the quick and personal reply. [import]uid: 64596 topic_id: 18237 reply_id: 69779[/import]

I’m looking at the amazon developer’s portal and I am not seeing where you would indicate the app was Kindle only. Has anyone come up with a way of denoting to either Amazon or it’s customers that their app is Kindle specific? Is it as simple as naming the app “My App - Kindle Version”? That seems off the me. @carlos

I don’t wish to hijack a thread but this begs the question from me about the Kindle build option.

My guess is everything is tweaked when building for Kindle to fit just the hardware/software capabilties of that device. Amazon does not want superfluous settings/options to be included. That being said, people do report Kindle builds working on other devices. So if your app is simple in the sense it does not need the functions Amazon lists in there FAQ (gyroscope, camera, WAN module, Bluetooth, microphone, GPS, or micro-SD), that a Kindle build indeed would “pass” as a universal android build? Basically if all my app needs is a touch-screen and wifi, it should work universally?

That is my understanding correct.

Daft Newbie question … I have a new Pro subscription, but I only have the option to build for iOS or Android - no Kindle or Nook … am I missing the obvious ?

Cheers - Steve

I think you may have asked this in another thread, but recent daily builds have moved this to a “Target App Store” option on the Android build screen.

Yes, thanks Rob - Steve
