Are you using Corona on a Level 3 IT BTEC Course?

I am looking for inspiration and another FE college (ordesparation will accept anyone) who is using the Corona SDK to teach units on a BTEC level 3 IT course instead of the more tradition programming languages. I would like to share resources and tears with anyone that is available. I currently teach in a grade 1 general FE college in the UK. [import]uid: 116086 topic_id: 20290 reply_id: 320290[/import]

Robert,
Not sure if it is the equivalent of BTEC level 3 IT, but I teach Corona SDK at the college junior level (approx. age of students would be 21 of most students if that helps with translating from U.S. system to U.K. system).
We are planning to add a first year course using Corona next Fall (which I will be teaching).
Would be happy to commiserate with you! [import]uid: 6551 topic_id: 20290 reply_id: 79559[/import]

Hi there,

That would be great if we could help each other out.

I teach in an FE (Further Education)college named West Herts College located in Watford, UK (postcode WD17 3EZ). I’m sure that if you Google us you’ll be able to find us. The age range for this course is 16-19 and would therefore be pre-university.

What part of the US are you in?

This unit would start in the next academic year (September) and last for only 11 weeks. During that time they would have to learn the language etc and carry out assignment work. Most would just re-jig the work carried out in class - but some will do a brilliant job.

I have asked for a price for the software and at present - costly! Do you subscribe for all of your computers or do you use the ‘free’ version?

Anyway - I’m rambling on…

Thanks for you offer and hopefully speak soon

Robert,
I’ve been using Corona for two years in the classroom. I’ve used it both ways… the free trial and with the license.
I’m currently in West Central Texas, but hope to be moving to a more humid (i.e. green) climate before too long (no definite plans, just a desire).
I don’t know if you have checked out the book I have written for use in the classroom on Corona, (http://www.BurtonsMediaGroup.com/books) but you are welcome take a look at it.

Looking forward to getting to know you! I’ve been to the England twice, had a great time!

Hi again,

Late Sunday night so a few hours to spare!

I have been playing with Corona and was impressed but now - I really don’t know. Since you have experience with using it with students, how do you get by with the Arm6 vs. Arm7 problems. It seems that this is holding me back slightly.

The education pricing I think is good but unless I can get it to work with older Androids it seems to be a no starter.

What is your experience?
I understand that daily build 319 is good for Arm6 but can’t find it?

A lot of my students have iPhones or iPads (we had a mobile initiative on our campus over the last 3 years), so test devices weren’t a problem. To test on the android side, I’ve been using a Google Nexus One (ARMv7) and just recently purchased a Kindle Fire (also ARMv7).

The Kindle Fire makes the most sense to me for an Android tablet test device.
As I understand it, build 706 was the last build that supported ARMv6. It is available to members through the daily download area. [import]uid: 6551 topic_id: 20290 reply_id: 83436[/import]

Hi there again,

I now have a working version of Corona working on the ARM6 phones so I am a very happy bunny.

Is your book finished and available? I am now going on leave for a week and so want to make a leap into the unknown!

Since I work in a college (16-19 year olds) we generally buy single paper copies but le ebooks licences. What is your pricing policy on such things?

Hi Robert,
The textbook has all of the primary content now and is available for download as an early release: http://www.burtonsmediagroup.com/books/beginning-mobile-app-development-with-corona/
I plan to add some additional education-specific material over the next 3 weeks. The plan is that it will become “Final” on March 1, 2012.
I prefer to deal in eBook licenses (much better for the environment, no shipping costs, no printing costs, and easier to get it transferred across the pond), but would look into a UK printer if there is enough demand.
Send me an email and I will provide you with a review copy and volume pricing information: DrBurton@BurtonsMediaGroup.com

Cheers!
Brian

Hi,

I’m looking for the version of Corona that supports ARMv6 - build 319 from what I understand. Does not seem to be available in the daily build area. What build are you running that supports ARMv6 and where can I get it.

Thanks. [import]uid: 28232 topic_id: 20290 reply_id: 90908[/import]
