Audio bed playing over video

Hi guys,

I hope you’re all well.

Just a quick question.

I’m developing an app that includes a menu that plays background music. If you click on one of the links it will play a bit of video. My client wants us to have the music to continue playing while the video is playing (i appreciate this may sound a bit messy, however its what they want).

Apart from sounding strange, can anyone see an issue with this? will it effect the overall performance of the app?

Many thanks,

On iOS, you may need to change the Audio Session category to allow mixing. Refer to the (advanced) Audio Session APIs linked to on the Audio Notes page. As for performance, it will depend greatly on the hardware and OS. Generally, the better the hardware and OS, the fewer problems you should have. For example, I expect an iPad 2 running the latest iOS to have no problems. I don’t anticipate problems with an iPad 1 running the latest iOS. But an iPad that is still on 3.2 I expect to have a lot of problems (due to known audio bugs in iOS which were later fixed).

One more thought, you might not want to use MP3 or AAC or any other audio codec that utilizes the hardware decoder for your audio. The video will likely want to consume that resource. IM4 or WAV may give you better performance at the cost of disk space and/or portability.
