Background size changes ?

Hello I have a background size 640 Width x 940 Height If i run it on Iphone4
or Ipad Simulator it fits the whole screen but if I run it on Iphone (ipod?) it has
a lot of missing space on the sides, so the whole screen is not cover by
background image. anyone know why this happens ? I know their is a few
ways to fix this but i`m just wondering why this happens? And if I built like
this what will be the results?
