Background threads

I am new to Corona and I have a question regarding having processes working on the background.

I am developing an app which will periodically check a Twitter feed and if there is an update to generate a notification.

I have it working on the Android platform, and I wanted to port it over to Corona so that I can support both Android and iOS.

Is there a library or a help on how background processing is done in Corona?

Feature is not available in Corona.

Bummer. Is it on the roadmap?

Is there any way to program that functionality in outside of Corona? Maybe in LUA?
