Briefly shows screen, then blanks out

I have a simple calculator type app for iphone and android. All is fine on iphone. On android if it is the initial startup all is fine. But if the program has already been running and I come back to it by taping on the icon on the android desktop, the screen briefly shows the app and then blanks out. But if I tap the blank screen the app is visible again and all is fine.
