CAF vs. WAV

I am building an app with about 50 sound files all about 5-8 seconds in length.

Currently, they are all saved as .wav files. Is there any reason to try to convert them to .caf sound files?

Seems the file size is about the same for both and .wav would work for both iphone and android, no? [import]uid: 22392 topic_id: 14577 reply_id: 314577[/import]

Anybody care to take a shot at this? [import]uid: 22392 topic_id: 14577 reply_id: 53943[/import]

From what I can tell, no. CAF files may be more efficient and sound better on iOS devices, but the reality is the world is WAV and MP3 based and WAV files are what’s needed for Android and they work just fine on iOS.

I have no desire to do extra work to make a CAF file

I think you are confusing file containers and codecs. If you use a linear PCM codec in CAF vs. linear PCM codec in WAV, you will see no difference whatsoever. But if you want to use the IMA-4 codec, CAF is the only container available.

See my video presentation (based off my book) here for a better explanation:

The file container/codec part is about 14 minutes in.
