Can I Record Audio using new Kindle Fire HD?

Our app for iOS and the Nook Tablet works by recording audio - it’s the central feature of the application. We’d like to release a version of the app for the Kindle Fire HD devices. Before we purchase a device, I wanted to confirm that Corona SDK can record audio using the new Fire HD devices.

Has anyone done this yet?

Thanks,

The HD Kindle Fires seem to be able to record video, so I would think that audio recording would be available too. The older Fire could record with a microphone plugged into the head phone jack apparently. Now the question is will Corona record audio and I’m going to assume yes, unless Amazon did anything strange in their port of Open Source android, but let me ask the team for verification.

I have a Corona app working on Kindle Fire HD which records audio through the built in mic.

The only problem I have is the recording quality doesn’t seem to be as good as it is on the iOS devices or other Android devices. It’s okay for my needs but if your app requires you to record at high quality this may be an issue. Anyone know if there’s a way to improve the quality? I’m saving my recordings to the device as .3gp files if it’s an Android device which I would have thought were pretty good quality… [import]uid: 123492 topic_id: 34714 reply_id: 138441[/import]

I’ve got the same problem. Results on a Samsung 10" tablet were OK, but on Kindle Fire HD 7", the recordings are very poor.

The bitrate is clearly way too low. Is there a way for Corona to choose better compression on this 3GP recording?

Would love to know if anyone from Corona or anyone else has some thoughts on the 3gp audio quality issue.

I have several devices now for testing, including a Kindle Fire HD…

  • The quality of recorded audio is awesome on the iPad 1, iPad 3, iPhone 4S and iPhone 5.

  • It is okay on the Google Nexus and the Sony Ericsson Xperia phone. Usable for my needs but could be better.

  • It is awful on the Kindle Fire HD and a generic cheap Android tablet I bought. Sounds like someone is strangling Darth Vader - loads of distortion.

  • It doesn’t even work on the Nabi 2 but that’s a different issue as they don’t support 3gp format at all.

Now I appreciate the quality of the microphone will vary but I have bought other apps that weren’t made in Corona which allow audio to be recorded and they work perfectly on the Kindle Fire HD with audio quality nearly as good as on my iPad 3, which is crystal clear. So - it’s definitely not that the mic is rubbish on the Kindle or that I have a dodgy Kindle.

Are there any plans to be able to record in other formats other than 3gp as standard for Android? It would really really help me enormously. I can’t let people download my app on Kindle Fire HD and some other Android devices at present - the audio recording is central to the app’s functionality and it’s so far off being good enough.

Thanks,

Ian

We’re in the same boat with the Kindle Fire HD. The recording works but the quality is really poor. Is there a way we can raise the priority of this one so you guys are able to look at it soon? Or, is there a workaround that you might know of that would improve the audio quality of recordings made on the Kindle Fire HD?

Thanks,
