Can't build, "Copying app to Xcode IOS Simulator" never completes

Hello,

I’m a newbie trying to learn Corona and I’ve been stuck trying to build the Corona weather sample found at https://github.com/coronalabs-samples/CoronaWeather.git -  The app works fine in the Corona simulator but when I try to build for IOS, the IOS simulator fires up, the loading progress bar starts but never completes. It reaches half way in about 30s then 30min later it’s about at 90% at which point I just click STOP (i’ve waited up to an hour).  I’ve tried another code samples with the same results.  What am i doing wrong? Any pointers much appreciated.

My system is a Macbook Pro running Sierra (10.12.1)

I’m using Xcode Version 8.1 (8B62)

I’ve added my appleID to Xcode accounts settings, and do not have any provisioning profiles.

Hi Stephen.

I’m not sure what’s going on there. On my system Xcode’s Simulator booted up properly. The screenshot on the right indicates that it got hung up while the Xcode simulator was in it’s startup process. This has to happen even before we try and install our app. Have you tried going into Xcode and just running the simulator and getting it started before you try and install to it (make sure it’s the same iPhone 5 sim you’re trying to use from the Corona build dialog.

However all that said, there does seem to be a problem once you get the app running in the simulator around the location database. I’m getting a run time error which doesn’t happen on a real device. I need to dig into this further as I don’t see a reason why this wouldn’t work in the Xcode simulator.

Rob

I think I’ve identified the source of my problem. In the log I see the app Start, Suspend and Resume immediately. There is an assumption users, on first start will want to be on the Location tab so they can configure where they are. It’s not expecting to suspend and resume that quickly and the app stays on the Location screen the resume is trying to go to the Current Conditions screen.

It’s going to take me some time to sort this out. If you can’t test on a real device, then you can work around this by hitting SHIFT-CMD-H twice, swipe the Corona Weather window up to kill it and launch it from the main screen. It will come up and run as expected.

Then you can test your changes at that point.

Rob

Hello Rob,

Yay, it all seems to be working now!

After manually starting the Xcode simulator for the first time (took about 30 seconds to initialize), it’s working as expected.  It now boots up in a few seconds.  I also encountered the issues you mentioned.

Thanks for your help.

Stephan

Hi Stephan.

I just pushed an update to CoronaWeather that will protect against the problem when using the Xcode iOS Simulator. Basically I deferred clearing the firstTime flag until the Locations scene is hidden the first time. Then on app resume, if I think it’s still the firstTime (i.e. you’re on the Locations screen) I don’t try to show the forecast.

Other changes to the code involve the severe weather display. The font was a little small and didn’t render well against the maroon background.

This comment by me seems to have hopped into the lower quote box. I hesitate to edit the post so I added this note.

I figured I’d try to start the Simulator separately first, and noticed that the IOS Simulator entry opened an age-old Simulator version. After removing that, Corona built the same thing as above, but succeeded in starting the app! So this was an old reference that wasn’t updated by the XCode install it seems.

So all is good?

Thanks

Rob

Yes. Thanks! Seems a conflict between the new and old IOS Simulator caused it.

Hello

Yes I had the same issue, the Xcode simulator App never seemed to get started when I tried to “build and open in Xcode sim”.  Then I saw this post and tried to use Xcode to start the simulator manually then use Corona to “build and open in Xcode…”. now I can see my App in the Xcode simulator.

Perhaps this is something Corona can look at or provide info to everyone that the best method for this is to manually open the Xcode simulator first.

Double-tapping Cmd-Shift-H shows no apps to kill, and my app is not on the home screens, so I can’t start it manually.

I’d be happy to add the plist settings mentioned in the log if I can some info on valid values.

XCode 8.3.2., IOS Simulator 10.0

Switching device from IOS 10.3 to 8.1 seems to behave differently in that it shows the Continue popup in Corona, but still no way to start the app.
