Carlos finally confirms Appcelerator Project

So the clues were there… the many presentations Carlos was giving alongside Appcelerator.

But at long last the veil has been removed - a new game framework based on Titanium called Platino.

Details seem a bit sparse at the moment but it seems to have kickstarted from the OpenGL code that a Titanium developer created a few months back.

Be interested to hear people’s opinions and whether or not anybody from Corona Labs has got something to say. [import]uid: 33275 topic_id: 31592 reply_id: 331592[/import]

Further details:

Platino™ is natively built on top of OpenGL ES 2.0 using C++. It provides a full physics engine based on Box2D, an isometric engine, particle effects, shaders, image filters, an advanced rendering pipeline built from scratch, and more. [import]uid: 33275 topic_id: 31592 reply_id: 126214[/import]

This looks like another exciting option for us mobile developers. There is just no stopping Carlos, and his crew looks like the Mobile Olympics A Team! mmmm I like particles… [import]uid: 21331 topic_id: 31592 reply_id: 126232[/import]

Carlos has been amazing in his support of developers and grand visions. It is early days but trust the new launch and product will be simply amazing and offer yet another option for developers.
Best of luck to Carlos and God speed. [import]uid: 93368 topic_id: 31592 reply_id: 126236[/import]

Hi everyone, just want to chime in here really quick.

Lanica looks interesting and we wish our former colleagues the best as they begin this project.

As we look ahead, we are very proud of the impact Corona is having on the lives of real developers each and every day. Corona is used by hundreds of thousands of developers. From my time on Flash and also the last 4 years, I can tell you that building a platform is not easy and it takes years — mobile is fragmented and challenging. We are continuing to plug away and super excited about all the cool stuff we’re going to get in your hands.

If any of you have any questions, you can email me any time at: walter at coronalabs dot com

thanks,

I’ve been a programmer since 1984 and have used dozens of languages/frameworks. Because I’m a code geek and because I like Carlos, I’ll be poking around Platino as soon as it’s available.

Just like I poke around Moai. Just like I poke around Stencyl. And others. At some point I’ll probably do a project with one or more of those, but right now my “bread and butter” is Corona SDK. Switching to the “new shiny thing” is no assurance you won’t run into problems. In fact, new stuff by it’s very nature is usually a bit unsteady and then gains solidity over time.

I remember when Gideros came out and some people left because “Corona can’t do X and Gideros can!” – and then later seeing those same people on the Gideros forum asking when it will be able to do Y, something Corona could already do.

If you’re a professional developer you *should* know about the new tools in your field. But don’t automatically think new == better. The word “better” in relation to a development platform has a lot of nuances.

I *am* looking forward to playing with Platino* and will bet Carlos’ new company will be very successful.

Jay

PS - I just wish I didn’t dislike Javascript so much. :frowning:

Well said Jay! Echos my sentiments exactly (which I posted in the other thread on the topic).

This will accelerate my migration from Corona SDK. I wanted to continue to use Corona SDK just because of lure of Lua. But unfortunately the development of this aspiring platform has been stagnant for many months now. I have been waiting for simple things like Admob, oauth2 support, better map function for more than a year now. Yet to see any move towards these basic things. Looks very interesting. I’m also watching over Stencyl to see what happens with 3.0. [import]uid: 10389 topic_id: 31592 reply_id: 126634[/import]
