OpenFeint is “required” now, but eventually it should be optional. If you purchase Corona, you can use either the Game Edition or the Non-Game Edition under the same license. The Non-Game version doesn’t bundle in OpenFeint, but it also doesn’t include the cool game features like physics, collisions, etc… so it’s mostly useful for non-game apps, utilities, etc.
OpenFeint does add an annoying bit of bloat, but I doubt the end user would notice very much, in terms of loading time.
