Compiling apps require external server? Really?

So I’ve spent a few bit of time looking at your videos and docs & was ready to give the Corona Game Edition a proper trial.

But then I read an article that said you need to upload your app to Ansca for compilation. Really?

I could only find one mention in your forums about this, but I gather it is the case. So what is the justication for this?

I can’t tell you what the justification might be, but I can tell you that whatever happens is basically invisible. You open your project in the simulator, fill in the name, version number, choose a provisioning profile, and then hit the build button. In a few seconds or so (depending on the size of your app) you have an app ready to be installed on your device.

So while something may be uploaded to Ansca’s servers, it’s not something that’s apparent to the developer.

It also means you don’t have to have the Android SDK (if you go that way) installed on your system to develop Android apps and I believe that if it wasn’t for Apples guidelines you wouldn’t even need the iOS SDK installed either.

I think I read somewhere that Ansca were throwing around ideas of how to do an offline build option as I know that would be very popular with a lot of developers, myself included. [import]uid: 5833 topic_id: 3063 reply_id: 9042[/import]

That would be awesome because I often find myself doing work where I don’t have access to internet connection, but I’m forced to put everything on hold until I get home once I get to a point where I need to test on the device (all of our games at the moment use accelerometer, so there’s no getting around it).

Ansca, if there’s a way for you to do offline builds without compromising your “secret sauce”, please enable this feature! [import]uid: 7849 topic_id: 3063 reply_id: 9055[/import]

hear hear.

I’m sure this would be a great this for us all…

For the past couple years my family lived on the road and my office was a picnic table in whatever park we happened to be in that day. When I needed internet access I’d head for the nearest Starbucks.

We’ve settled down for the next two years to get our oldest done with school and “launched” but after that we’ll probably hit the road again. I’ll probably be rich from several hit iOS games by then and will have always-on mobile high speed satellite internet, but just in case I’m still working on that first million, an offline compile option would be most helpful.

justification for doing online builds?

so that you don’t have to install android sdk and deal with the intricacies of xcode. Also, goes without saying, rolling updates…etc.

And goes without saying, business model…

And we are listening to your feedback…

C.

ps: we never see your code… and once the magic happens on our server, all your assets get deleted immediately.

I did have a little fright yesterday afternoon (November 1) when I tried to compile my app and the Corona server kept asking for (and rejecting) my password. It only lasted for a few minutes, and that’s the first time in over eight months it’s happened, but it did send just a tiny shiver down my spine.

Many big companies hold their source code in escrow so if the company ceases trading the code is opened up and their clients can continue on using the code as required.

Not saying this is ideal but its an idea. [import]uid: 5354 topic_id: 3063 reply_id: 9834[/import]

Dear all,

from my perspective, the online build “business model” is a huge problem.

Contemporary I project a range of iOS apps, which should be doable significantly faster in Corona - I evaluated several environments for iOS graphics development and ended up with corona being my favorite - until I discovered this online thing.

To not being able to compile your own source code without access to a server several thousand miles away is a no-go for a platform decision for a longer development roadmap. I’d happily reserve significantly more $ for your (impressing) development environment, if it really can be used freely, then. Annual renewal fees are not a problem as well - many professional packages come that way: Other developers’s cats need some fresh fish as well

The technical advantages of your product should have the potential for a (even) broad(er) acceptance within the industry - also as a professional platform. With this online feature many deciders have to exclude Corona from their list, simply because they don’t want to do excessive work like escrow agreements, etc, or are subject to development tools guidelines.

I ponder to buy one personal copy to play at home or whip up some - surely impressive - even angrier birds game. Corona definitely deserves better - please let me know, what you think.

Sincerely,
