Connecting to server...

I apologize if this is covered elsewhere, I checked the FAQs and did some googling to no avail.

I am very excited about Corona, and have started using the trial. Once the app takes shape, I will no doubt purchase a license (wish it was a bit cheaper, but I suppose I’ll survive

However, I notice the product contacts the server on every single build.

I will possibly be going on an extended trip, where the Internet coverage is quite spotty. I have a concern that I won’t be able to do development while offline.

Is this the case? Or does it only happen with the trial?

This could be a showstopper for me in moving forward with Corona.

Thanks,

Apologies again, I did find a threat and confirmation about this. D’oh.

http://developer.anscamobile.com/forum/2010/10/25/compiling-apps-require-external-server-really

Probably a showstopper for me. I would pay more for an offline build.

Does anyone know the amount of traffic involved? I will measure it and see. (If it’s mainly uploading the lua files and downloading some compiled code, not the full 20M app, then it might be workable.)

Hate to ask this in Ansca’s forums, but what would the best alternative be to Corona, that supports offline building? I doubt anything would be as good, but I need that offline ability.

Thanks,

Argh, to answer my own question, each build of a minimal program seems to result in about 3MB of traffic.

Fine if you’re on high speed, brutal if you’re tethered, impossible if you’re offline.

Blah.

Nice product, but may not be the one for me, sadly. [import]uid: 40450 topic_id: 7059 reply_id: 24760[/import]

Just to finish up this lonely thread of mine…

Look at the alternatives. Most of the others are HTML/JavaScript based, which is, errr, okay. The only serious contender seemed to be Titanium Appcelerator, which sounded very promising.

But wow. It is sooooo slow. Even without going to the internet, builds (including incremental) seem to take 2 minutes. It’s faster for the server-based builds with Corona.

And Titanium wouldn’t build the demo projects properly, I have weird project configuration problems, yadda, yadda, yadda. It’s really a mess, IMHO.

So I guess I’ll bite the bullet and put up with the 'net requirement, in order to use this far superior product.

I am on dial up also…I thought may be I did something wrong so simulator stopped responding and I did a search on goggle and ended up in here…damn my 10KB speed wont be enough  [import]uid: 48300 topic_id: 7059 reply_id: 29765[/import]
