Copyright and trademark questions.

I am in the process of creating my app, and I am wondering, how do you make images or get images that are not copyrighted so you can use them in your game and not get sued? Do you have the personally make or create the images yourself through a image making software? What can you do, and once you have all your images ready, and ready to publish your game, do you need to trademark your company name and/or game name? do you need to copyright it?

Images and Licences

Sure making them yourself or having them made is great, but you can find all kinds of free art online with various CC-* licenses.

One of my favorite sources is:  http://kenney.nl/

(Note: I donated more than the asking price to Kenney because his stuff rocks!  You should too if you get his full pack.)

Companies and Copyrights

That kind of question is best left to a lawyer, but many of us have our own companies and do copyright (at least by statement) or work.

Here is another great source (where I first saw Kenney’s work): http://opengameart.org/

Thank you roaming gamer for the reply, I will look online for CC-* licenses and/or create my own images. Now for the link you just sent, when I click on it, it says the page cannot be found.

  1. Make the art yourself.

  2. Contract an artist to make your art for you.  Look in our Marketplace forums ( Several artists are looking for clients to make art for.

  3. Use a stock art site (you pay a small fee to get art)

  4. Find free sources on line (@roaminggamer pointed you to some great sources).  But there are plenty of websites that offer up free art but the art may not be free for your app’s use.  Many artists will make stuff free for personal use but not commercial use.  If you charge for your app or have ads or in app purchases, you’re commercial.

Thank you very much!
