Corona Feedback: A Suggestion

The Preface: I love the Corona Feedback page. It gives Corona Labs a great way to check on clamor for certain features without it taking control over the work you actually have to do.

The Problem: It’s defaulting to “Top Ideas” when it should be “New” or “Random”.

Why? When you default to showing the most popular (most voted) ideas, then most users will only ever see the most voted ideas. There’s too many ideas for one page, thus most users will also never see new ideas because they are hidden on the last page. This is a real phenomenon known as “vote stacking”.

With 5 pages of ideas right now (and presumably more soon!) anything not on the first page is basically doomed to die a quiet death because they have no exposure to anyone except users who have time to carefully crawl through every page before voting.

I think many of the ideas listed on the first page have a good reason to be there, but if you look at the vote spread right now (compare voting on page 1 vs 2 or 3) and you’ll see what I mean. You’d probably see a much more realistic vote distribution if there was a randomized or new-focused list. [import]uid: 41884 topic_id: 35312 reply_id: 335312[/import]

Yep i agree. I got a bit carried away with my votes and ran out before i even got a page or so in! [import]uid: 69826 topic_id: 35312 reply_id: 140338[/import]

Yeah, this should definitely be changed. The already popular ones get even more popular because people don’t even bother looking at all the other feedback. [import]uid: 51654 topic_id: 35312 reply_id: 140339[/import]

I agree. It probably would help if the default is set to “New” rather than “Hot” or “Top” (which appears to be the case at the moment.)

That said, you can change your vote by going to your settings screen. You can remove your vote or change the number of vote you give it. I suppose it’s not very conspicuous or clear – and most people do not get there (unless you’ve got a very compelling reason to change your vote and are determined to fix it somehow.)

Hi all,
This is very good feedback… on the feedback system. I’m checking into this now to see what the best solution is… I’ll keep you posted.

How about we get 30 votes each. 15 up votes and 15 down votes. It seems there’s strong opposition to MAC apps in the comments yet those users can’t do anything but vote for other options.
Also, besides myself nobody has suggested any Corona Cloud stuff. Are that that few beta testers? [import]uid: 9035 topic_id: 35312 reply_id: 140379[/import]

Hi all (again),
It appears the system (that powers this) doesn’t easily allow for randomization of features, although I agree that would be nice. We’re checking further to see if this possible.

As for setting it to “Top” by default, that is basically the same as “Hot Ideas”… or am I missing something? Setting it to “New” is somewhat better, and could be a good alternative to discourage vote-stacking.

@WideAwakeGames,
I like this idea too (up and down votes) but I’ll have to check if the system allows that. It might very well balance things out over the long run. If not, however, the comments can still be taken into final account.

Thanks,
Brent [import]uid: 200026 topic_id: 35312 reply_id: 140383[/import]

? No idea what you’re talking about, like I said, it’s set to Top by default, so set to New…like you said it’s a quick fix until something better exists.

Personally I don’t feel votedown really helps, the whole idea is to vote for what you like to see, not stamp out everyone else. Comments do that job just fine. [import]uid: 41884 topic_id: 35312 reply_id: 140384[/import]

The other thing that would have been nice is if the system could have been tied into the forum login. That way you could differentiate between what your customers and prospective customers want out of Corona. [import]uid: 9035 topic_id: 35312 reply_id: 140385[/import]

Hey everyone - thank you for all the helpful suggestions. This is great.
Couple of quick comments:

  1. the idea about not having the page default to “Top” is a great one. I have a support request into Uservoice to find out if this is possible. I’ve looked through the admin area and can’t find how to do it - so hopefully they can give me some info on this. I hope it is possible…

  2. They don’t have any “down voting” functionality. But I don’t think that is necessary as the point is not to battle it out, but rather to just see what emerges

  3. They do have single sign on functionality - so we can tie it into our identity system (And potentially distinguish between trial users, subscribers, etc.). But in the interest of getting things out quickly, we havent done this yet. We’ll try to get to this in the near future, but it’s not a huge priority.

So that’s a quick update on things. I do hope it is possible to change the default “Top” view as I agree that may just lead to the “top” ideas getting more and more votes at the expense of more vote-worthy ones further down. We will be constrained by what uservoice currently offers - but we’ll see.

Thanks,

David

Ok - the page now defaults to “New” ideas. Which is good, as it shows the newest things entered (ie the ones with the fewest votes). They don’t have a “random” setting, but I’ve let them know it would be useful.

So I think that fixes the biggest issue so far.

Please keep the feedback coming. Thanks again.
