Corona Level Editor

Is there any new news on the Corona Level Editor that is due out at any moment? Do we have a release date or an estimated release date?

I would love to start a couple new projects with this new Level Editor as soon as it is released.
Thank you,

I’d like to know this as well, is it still in pipeline? It would spead up my development alot. Can you give us any information about this project? [import]uid: 13099 topic_id: 26270 reply_id: 106517[/import]

It is still in active development, we can’t give a specific ETA at present [import]uid: 84637 topic_id: 26270 reply_id: 106563[/import]

From my memory, Carlos’ ex Blog stated that it was a couple weeks away if there was no unforeseen bugs, and if so then it would be days more “not months”. [import]uid: 7197 topic_id: 26270 reply_id: 106653[/import]

Not to toss stuff in the fire, but I’ve had the level editor for a few weeks now.

I downloaded it from the link that was on the forum. I know it’s not “released” as it was a bunch of people testing it.

ng
*edit* just searched high and low for the link, I can’t find it anywhere. Either case, I played with it for about 20 minutes, but found I was much faster via command line

The reason was I didn’t see any joint types in there, which was something I was looking for. Maybe that changes with release, I don’t know

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Is that link still available? Is the Level Editor Nice? [import]uid: 7197 topic_id: 26270 reply_id: 106659[/import]

Thanks. I am thinking about making my up coming game with Level Helper instead. I am getting tired of waiting. [import]uid: 7197 topic_id: 26270 reply_id: 106660[/import]

All traces of the link was removed it was accidentally posted [import]uid: 7911 topic_id: 26270 reply_id: 106662[/import]

Uh, I was never here

Ahh, I knew it! I saw the link and then hit up a lot of my dev friends to DL it. Our view on it was on a scale of 0 - 100% I found it to be around a 70%.

That was of course an earlier build, I think the design of it looks wise is good, but the interface was oddball to me. I found my self wanting to use it a certain way and felt forced to do it another. It’s kind of like when you pick up an iphone for the first time and an android the first time. For me, I picked up the iphone and was instantly able to use it without knowing anything about it. Then I picked up android and the way I thought it would work, wasn’t and it took me a while to get used to it. Thankfully that was a great experience, I was in the store and had both phones next to one another and using a smartphone for the first time (outside of my work blackberry…meh).

The workflow on it has potential to be great, It’s still in progress though that was pretty easy to tell.

Don’t read into this as bashing or anything like that, I’m just giving yout the view from 5 people. We had a discussion on “why does it feel like I am fighting the interface” was a common theme. The background is 3 of us that didn’t code before trying corona felt confused and it needed to be more intuitive, while the technically code proficient people ( the other 2) felt it was very workable but needed to be more intuitive. So I guess the theme was really “needs to be more intuitive” if that’s all you get from this post

I can see how this will change things for some people and really increase the speed. For me I felt slowed down by it, I wanted to create all these joints and stuff and do these crazy things and realized it wasn’t built for that (or at least not yet).

Take from this what you will, I think it’s GREAT ansca is working on something like this. I think they should have released it at least as a open beta for people to tell them what they think about it.

Accidental post or not, It got downloaded and distributed quite a few times

Just my 2 cents but I wish Ansca would use the resources for improving the game engine and forget about a level editor… after all, Level Helper already does pretty much everything a level editor should/can do. Not trying to be rude… just greedy for new engine functionality! ; )

@interAlia

I forgot to add that to my response. I COMPLETELY Agree!
Level helper though, the problem I have with it is a long list. The way it spits out code is odd, its like an all in one end to end rollout. I had problems trying to piece together one thing and then use that for the rest. I said NOPE and dropped it.

As you said, I too would rather the resources go into things like improving the physics engine, and other stuff that people complain about

I think they should have level editor if they want to stay competitive. There are other solutions out there that have integrated development editor, level editor, scripting and the also offer publishing for android, ios, windows, flash, mac. These solutions have most of other feature corona has, like: ads, in-app puchasing, physics, etc. So I think the editor they are working on will pay off, they need it to stay competitive and I hope they are also working on win 8 metro & mac publishing. +1 for updating the physics engine.

Regarding Level Helper:

I completely agree, Ansca IMHO should concentrate on developing the engine and removing the bugs. Instead of writing your own Level Helper you could try to support 3rd party tools like LevelHelper by Bogdan Vladu.

We use his LevelHelper and SpriteHelper tools all the time for four different projects.
Its sometimes a bit complicated, but there are some nice tutorials and the documentation out there, so for programmers used to working with different tools its easy to get into LH & SH.

Right now the open beta for LevelHelper 1.4.9 was published with Corona support, and now there are all the features I missed from the former versions (e.g. I can now give custom parameters to the objects defined in LH, like HitPoints to an enemy sprite).

Best,

I’m against re-inventig the wheel all the time. It would be faster to work with the guys developing LevelHelper or Lime to integrate these tools into Corona, they could even hire them or buy a share in their companies, there are lots of options.

The reason why I’m using Corona is that I don’t want to code all the stuff the Corona frameworks gives me by myself - and maybe Ansca should not try to do their own Level Editor when already their are a bunch of cool tools out there, that would just need a bit of polishing and integration.

As we can see Ansca has only limited resources and they should use these to address pressing matters like updating the physics engine, integrating InApp purchases for Amazon Kindle Fire etc. - things ONLY Ansca can do. Tools can be done by 3rd party developers, this is an old and honored tradition. [import]uid: 107675 topic_id: 26270 reply_id: 110598[/import]
