Corona SDK Adopt-a-Newbie Mentor Scheme!

Hi,

Being a newbie is daunting, confusing and sometimes extremely frustrating when trying to create something you are really interested in. Sometimes to the point where you just want to give up!

We all know we are a loving community here at Corona SDK forums and I would like to propose the following:

Corona SDK Adopt-A-Newbie Mentor Scheme!

The idea behind the scheme is for a newbie with a big idea to post his plans on here and then for a senior member of the community to mentor, teach and help the newbie to get their goal.

I think both parties need to lay out some ground rules before they agree to begin the mentorship. Basic rules I propose from this scheme:

  • All code is released to the community to learn from.

  • Any programs that are published must be release for free for the first 6 months.

  • An agreement between both parties on how often communications may occur and reply times. Some mentors may only like to answer 1 question a week to force the newbie to do a little research before asking too many questions.

The list can be fine tuned ofcourse… Im just throwing around ideas.

What do you think?

Yes, I would like a mentor to help out but I think this would work well for many folks on here.

i think it might be a pretty good idea, if done properly of course
it will help all newbies out here to learn something in process of building app from scratch [import]uid: 16142 topic_id: 14570 reply_id: 53911[/import]

Hi Adrian,
Nice to see another Aussie and to be more precise, another Queenslander on the forum, there are quite a few Aussies but they keep in the background.

the only problem with this is putting in the time from the busy schedules of a sr. developer. However it is indeed a brilliant idea.

if it helps you, you can read my blogs/sites at

Thanks guys… your help well be appreciated.

jayantv: We aussies are lerking everywhere  As long as the senior member and newbie lay out some expectations then I think people can work around it. Im more on the mature side (37) of the fence so I can understand peoples work load etc, some younger may need a slap around the ear every now and again. hehe

indiegamepod: thank you for your assist with this… hopefully we get some good results from all this and can keep it alive

Thanks again and hopefully we can get some more senior or even Corona folks helping out!

I think this rule is unreasonable:

Any programs that are published must be release for free for the first 6 months.

Just because I offer someone a little help, I don’t see why that should prohibit them making a paid or advertising supported app.

I consider myself to be somewhere between a newbie and an expert. I have 2 apps currently available ( a paid and a free version of the same app). As I was learning Lua and CoronaSDK I didn’t post any questions in these forums, but I was a regular reader and I learned a lot from what was posted. I also used some of the code from the code exchange (director, joystick, etc.). I don’t think I’m taking advantage of anyone by trying to profit from my apps.

Newcomer to Corona here  I’d love to have a ‘mentor’ Hope to help out in the future too! [import]uid: 50842 topic_id: 14570 reply_id: 53992[/import]

Hi elbowroomapps: As I said in the original post, its up to the Mentor and the “newbie” to work out any terms and conditions. They were merely suggestions. [import]uid: 83851 topic_id: 14570 reply_id: 54006[/import]

Well I might start on describing what Im doing and where I am at.

Im programming a basic game similair to Missile Command… .sorta kinda. It’s a space station in orbit that has to destroy asteroids before they hit the station. Couple screenshots below…

I’m having a view issues but have ideas on how to resolve or from ideas that I read on how to resolve them but due to my lack of knowledge / experience cant put 2 and 2 together to progress. I’ve been working on the layout and different screens to keep me going for now but Im getting to the point where I need to nut out the show stopping bugs to get things working properly.

A to-do list is available at http://ado.mycloudnas.com/ToDo.txt

This game will never get published but the full code will be released on here when I’m done for whoever to do what they want with it. As things progress I will add extra features and flesh out some more content. Graphics are an issue for me… not too good with Gimp and drawing.

If anyone wants to help out… let me know. n00bs.software at gmail dot com.

Hi,

Sounds nice…I’m looking to help students finish their games…in fact, I go to various schools and give talks to students about finishing games via Corona…so I’d be happy to help out.

I’ve also had experience getting an app in the top 10.

For any student reading this, send me an e-mail if interested…I’ll choose one or two and help out. support *** at *** indiegamepod *** dot *** com
