Corona SDK Subscription - Pro

Hello all,

I want to learn how to create and submit apps for monetary gain, I’m planning on buying the Pro Subscription.  I’ve already reviewed a few sites on how to create apps for Corona, but what I don’t see any explanation regarding when to use these brackets { [ or why do you use end, end, end on three separate lines. I’ve downloaded the Corona tutorial to my pc, I really want to learn how to make apps.

My question is does the Pro Subscription provide all the information I need to learn how to create apps?

Thank you,

David

P.S.  This is my first time in a forum, please excuse me if I did this incorrectly.

Personally I would advise that you download the starter version first:

https://developer.coronalabs.com/downloads/coronasdk

and work through some video tutorials:

Corona is fantastic, so after some practice I’m sure you’ll see the benefit to buying the pro version, but I since it is a yearly fee, why pay for time when you are learning the basics? Better to use the “pro-time” when you are actually making the app that you want to release.

Do you already have any programming experience? I’ve seen people on the forums before who want to make a game without doing any programming, and Corona doesn’t work like that. It does have lots of sample projects built in, but you need to know the basics before you can understand what they are doing.

I could explain the brackets and end keyword, but to be honest they are some of the most basic parts of Lua, which tells me you haven’t studied much (if any) of the language yet. The tutorials on learningcorona.com should be more than able to help you out there.

With regards to “submit apps for monetary gain”, it’s not an easy win. There are a huge number of people developing apps that make no money, so you really need to have a good idea of how you plan to monetise the app (paid, adverts, in-app purchases etc). On top of that, the app itself needs to be based on a good idea, and on top of that you need to implement the whole thing well. I wish you all the best, but don’t want you to go into this without some forewarning of the challenges ahead.

Lastly, for your first time on a forum I’d say your post was just fine.

You:

  • Asked a straightforward question
  • Gave some background info
  • Didn’t type the whole thing in capital letters or textspeak
  • You didn’t reply 5 mins later saying “It’s ok I found the answer” without sharing the answer

Remember that last one, there is a special place in hell for people who do that

Good luck!

Alan provided a great answer to your post.  However, to answer your question more directly:  No, the Pro version will not teach you how to program.  The Pro version just has some features unlocked that the Starter version doesn’t.  But Alan is right, it seems like you are very new to programming and first need to learn the ropes.  Besides learningcorona.com, also search for Corona tutorials on Youtube.  Most importantly, DO NOT buy the Pro version anytime soon.  It may take you a while to get the hang of Lua/Corona (BTW, Lua is the programming language that Corona utilizes), and buying Pro now is not a good idea.

Hello @eojfvdn, @JonPM,

As a side note, “learningcorona.com” is essentially abandoned, and many of the links within are broken or outdated. With that in mind, I suggest the following pages if you’re new to Corona:

Corona guides: http://docs.coronalabs.com/guide/index.html

TandG guides/tutorials hub: http://www.tandgapps.co.uk/resources/coronalabs-resources/

Best regards,

Brent Sorrentino

Thank you all for responding so quickly,

I am newer than new to the world of apps, in fact I forgot to mention that I bought a beginner’s guide book - Corona SDK Mobile Game Development by Michelle M. Fernandez.  I haven’t finished the book yet, but submitting (if that’s how you call it) the “Hello World” was very satisfying, I’m very excited about learning more and I will go to all the sites mentioned.

I know I have a lot to learn and I will learn everything I can; I will also hold off on buying the Pro for now.  Is there a chat room here for newbies?

Thanks again,

David

No chat room that I’m aware of, but the forums are quite busy.

If you have any problems then just ask clearly on here and someone is sure to help you out
