I stumbled upon this in daily build 2203: display.newEmitter(jsonParameters)
From the 2014.2203 docs:
Overview
This function is used to create an EmitterObject, used to display particle effects created with Particle Designer.Syntax
display.newEmitter( jsonParameters )jsonParameters (required)
The JSON parameters as outputted by Particle Designer.

I’ve drooled over Particle Designer for a *long* time – although I don’t really need any extra excuses to buy more stuff. 
Can’t wait for that new feature to be released!

Particle Designer support will probably remain a Pro feature, but we may include it in the “Basic” tier at some point.
