Hmm, I fear there’s no substitute for a big old marketing budget these days.
Also I’m no expert in SEO but I’d have thought Corona should be near the top when searching for 'cross platform game engine. It’s no where near, and doesn’t even feature in the little scrollView at the top of Google.
IIRC EA used Corona for one or two games about four years ago.
Also, big (non-game) entities have used it. I worked with Reel FX + Relativity Media + 20th Century Fox on a few Corona games a while back.
There are also many games made with Corona sold through big publishers.
That said, I suspect that most large entities are drawn to engines that provide 3D and 2D capabilities. Remember, these companies have huge budgets so they can pour more money into all aspects of the game, including modelling. For them, using a engine can can render 3D models as part of a 2D design makes great sense.
It is weird from our POV because clearly Corona is easier and faster to develop with for 2D games, but we don’t use the same lens as the AAA and other mega companies.
@nick_sherman, we put a pretty good effort into SEO. I just did a search on “Cross platform game engine” and we showed on the first page and were the 2nd or 3rd real engine if you take the “Top X game engines” out. I don’t know what Google chooses for that scrollView, but Unreal Engine, Defold, Cocos 2d X, and Love2D and BuildBox are all missing, so while I would like to be there, obviously a lot of other players are not there too.
@roaminggamer, if I remember correctly even Disney has used Corona for Dolphins Tale. Many AAA studios have their own engines and even Unreal Engine can’t get into their shops.
@IndieEnthusiast, we put a serious investigation into coming up with a certification program a couple of years ago and it’s just not a practical project for us when there are many other more important things we can spend our time and energy on.

Search for cross platform 2d game engine…15th. 15th? There’s some random github repo at 3rd, and Defold at 2nd which has been out about 5 minutes…
Looking at our metadata, “2d” is a missing keyword. I’ll see what we can do to get it added. I’m open to additional suggestions.

I’m not surprised that Defold is high. It saw a major update recently and a TON of YouTube videos published about it recently.
Maybe we need more Corona videos?
