Corona university course

I was wondering if there is any corona course, or a certification which will state that one is a corona developer?

Just a thought, it came to my mind since it is a popular game development language.

The idea was floated for some time but never took off.  (Work was undertaken, but I think it fizzled out.)

It requires money to create course material and nobody wants to pay for it (on the development end or the student end).

Also, as I and others can attest, creating a whole course curriculum and supporting materials is a massive endeavor.

So, while I still like the idea, I don’t see it happening without investment by someone or some entity.

If it happens I would pay to get a certification from CoronaLabs. Please create a course cirriculum so that we can be certified developers.

I believe that this ultimately comes down to supply and demand. Sure, the supply is there, but is there enough demand to justify creating a certificate program?

Certificate programs generally exist to prove to potential employers or clients that you possess at least a certain level of knowledge in something. This means that getting certified for the sake of being certified isn’t worth much. I am personally not aware of how many companies are looking to hire Corona developers, so I don’t know if there is sufficient demand.

Personally, whenever I’ve wanted to convince someone of my skills with Corona, I’ve showed them a portfolio of my apps and code, etc.

This comes to a very interesting question, Do any game development firms actually hire Corona developers?

I have not heard any.

Me neither, most people within the games industry I’ve talked to haven’t even heard of it. I contracted for a large mobile developer who were using Unity, but really for the stuff they were doing Corona would probably have been more suitable.

It’s a shame, it’s a great product that hasn’t made the impact it should have.

To make corona popular, part of the responsibility also lies on us to make real fun games.

Hmm, I fear there’s no substitute for a big old marketing budget these days.

Also I’m no expert in SEO but I’d have thought Corona should be near the top when searching for 'cross platform game engine. It’s no where near, and doesn’t even feature in the little scrollView at the top of Google.

IIRC EA used Corona for one or two games about four years ago.

Also, big (non-game) entities have used it.  I worked with Reel FX + Relativity Media + 20th Century Fox on a few Corona games a while back.

There are also many games made with Corona sold through big publishers.

That said, I suspect that most large entities are drawn to engines that provide 3D and 2D capabilities.  Remember, these companies have huge budgets so they can pour more money into all aspects of the game, including modelling.  For them, using a engine can can render 3D models as part of a 2D design makes great sense.

It is weird from our POV because clearly Corona is easier and faster to develop with for 2D games, but we don’t use the same lens as the AAA and other mega companies.

@nick_sherman, we put a pretty good effort into SEO. I just did a search on “Cross platform game engine” and we showed on the first page and were the 2nd or 3rd real engine if you take the “Top X game engines” out.  I don’t know what Google chooses for that scrollView, but Unreal Engine, Defold, Cocos 2d X, and Love2D and BuildBox are all missing, so while I would like to be there, obviously a lot of other players are not there too.

@roaminggamer, if I remember correctly even Disney has used Corona for Dolphins Tale. Many AAA studios have their own engines and even Unreal Engine can’t get into their shops.

@IndieEnthusiast, we put a serious investigation into coming up with a certification program a couple of years ago and it’s just not a practical project for us when there are many other more important things we can spend our time and energy on.

Rob

Search for cross platform 2d game engine…15th. 15th? There’s some random github repo at 3rd, and Defold at 2nd which has been out about 5 minutes…

Looking at our metadata, “2d” is a missing keyword. I’ll see what we can do to get it added. I’m open to additional suggestions.

Rob

I’m not surprised that Defold is high.  It saw a major update recently and a TON of YouTube videos published about it recently.

Maybe we need more Corona videos?
