Fellow Coronaites and Coronians!
Allow me to introduce you to a new Coding Challenge called CoronaBlitz.
CoronaBlitz is a mini coding challenge where you get a theme and you have to code up a game. The catch is, you will get a max of 1 - 4 hours to code the game with the goal to complete the coding in one sitting. The Game should have some game elements in it, either “get as high of a score you can” or some win / lose type of mechanic, and it should be fun! (Though fun is subjective.)
Each CoronaBlitz will be open for a 2 - 4 week period, so you can find a good time to sit down and create an entry. You are allowed to submit more than one entry if you so desire.
Each entry should contain a breakdown of where you spent your time (if you’re so inclined to share) as well as a self assessment of how you think you did - PASS / FAIL
Don’t break any copyright or trademark laws with what your entries for any CoronaBlitz.
You can release your game entered for any CoronaBlitz under any license you see fit, and you can make your entry into a commercial game.
Remember this is a coding challenge and not a full out contest per say. Since it is a coding challenge, the generation of content does not count toward the “time limit” as long as you don’t modify the main code of the game.
Have fun and get better with Corona!
Details about the first CoronaBlitz will be posted shortly. Feel free to discuss this new challenge below.
FAQ:
Q: What’s the point of this?
A: To give developers that use Corona, a forum where they can hone and test their skills in a short amount of time. This also provides a great way to learn Corona, and can show you how much you can truly get done in a short amount of time with Corona. I participated in mini-contests like this and used Corona myself, and it really helped me learn more about it and in the long run I’m much better with Corona because of it.
Q: Do I have to use Corona for this Challenge?
A: Yes, that’s why it’s called CoronaBlitz.
Q: Is this a Jam?
A: I guess it could be considered a Jam, but it’s really not ment to compete with any other Jam that’s out there, or any future Jam planned. CoronaBlitz is suppose to be a “short sprint” style challenge.
Q: 2-4 weeks for 1-4 hours?
A: This is especially for those that find it hard to find time to participate in longer jams. I find it much easier to find a time slice of 1-4 hours given 2-4 weeks to find it.
Q: Can’t people cheat by thinking about what they are doing ahead of time?
A: I wouldn’t consider that cheating, since you’re only given 1-4 hours to actually code the game. There has been some debate in the IRC room about this, and after a couple of CoronaBlitz Challenges I may throw in a BlindCoronaBlitz Challenge, where you get the theme right when you start.
Q: Can’t people go over the time limit and report back that it only took them 2 hours when it really took them 10 hours to code?
A: Yes they can. This is a honor based system and there are no prizes, so in the long run, you’d only be cheating yourself.
Q: No judges?
A: No, the challenge is ment to be self judged.
Q: No prizes?
A: No, but I am thinking about making some type of points system. Details about this to be given and debated at a later time.
