Creating a video of game - recommended apps

I have read that having a video of a new game is an essential marketing tool. I would therefore appreciate some recommendations for tools to create these videos. They don’t necessarily have to be free tools but free leaves more money for the important things in life like beer. [import]uid: 7863 topic_id: 5399 reply_id: 305399[/import]

Personally, I’m a fan of using Jing Pro in tandem with the Xcode or Corona iOS simulator. [import]uid: 13089 topic_id: 5399 reply_id: 18050[/import]

I use IShowU, and I’ve heard good things about Snapz.

Thing is, these tools only work to capture the simulator and there are definitely differences between how things look in the simulator and how things look on device. I’m gonna try to make a marketing version of my app that looks right in the simulator because doing it that way yields much better image quality, but if that doesn’t work I’ll have to see if I can record the app on device.

At least the Corona simulator isn’t exactly the same as device; I haven’t tried building for the XCode simulator, maybe that’ll be an improvement.

Are there any ways to do video-out from an iPhone? Probably not, but I’ve never really thought about it before. [import]uid: 12108 topic_id: 5399 reply_id: 18097[/import]

Thanks jhocking - I will have a look at these tools.

Hmm I suppose you could set up a video camera on a tripod and an iPhone but not sure how well it would video with screen reflections etc [import]uid: 7863 topic_id: 5399 reply_id: 18228[/import]

I was also hoping for a way to record video directly off the iPhone, because I use the accelerometer. It would be a pretty boring video otherwise, but maybe that is just wishful thinking… [import]uid: 5786 topic_id: 5399 reply_id: 18311[/import]

Check the promo video on this site:

That’s one of the best videos of the screen I’ve seen. Maybe drop them an email or tweet and ask them for their secret.

Then come back and share it here because I’d like to know.

IMHO Jing (free edition) is great. It only exports as swf video but theres plenty of converters. Jing has a very neat interface and I just leave it running all the time now. [import]uid: 8271 topic_id: 5399 reply_id: 18461[/import]

A lot of work, but you can always mix the two. Stick some “greenscreen” paper over your iThing and shoot it in normal lighting. Then drop in your screen capture after the fact.

I needed to show tapping and used the PhoneFinger app to replace the mouse with my own photography of a “santa” hand during screen capture (iSHowU HD) and added the titles, snow, etc… later.

Someone should make a Monty Python style gorilla hand for this [import]uid: 5339 topic_id: 5399 reply_id: 19426[/import]

Well played sir. I like your promo video and the concept of you app is so well timed and implemented!

Careful with promo videos on Vimeo:

Snapz Pro X is very good too. Records at 30fps with sound and to various formats.

It has a fully functional 15 day trial and then the video is watermarked. Its great for your first app, after that you’ll have to buy it or use something else.

I tried jing, but it didnt record the sound and it was a bit laggy in places. [import]uid: 8872 topic_id: 5399 reply_id: 23598[/import]

I’ve used lots of different capture and editing tools over the years, and this one is the best I’ve come across:

http://www.telestream.net/screen-flow/overview.htm

Screenflow not only captures audio and video, but provides a great editing interface for cropping/trimming/sequencing/dissolves/freeze frames/callouts/titles and even custom cursors.

$99, demo available.

The thing that’s impressed me the most about it though is it’s raw performance. Always realtime playback, never a glitch. Export to any QT format.

Another alternative is to have the Daily App Show review your game.
