Do apps get rejected by apple because of the generic splashscreen?

Hi, I had the unfortunate experience today that my app got rejected by Apple because of “potentially objectionable content, such as nudity, pornography, and profanity” - something my app contains none off.

In fact the only thing that spring to mind that could offend somone is the “made with corona-labs” splashscreen?

If anyone should be interested they can see for them self: https://testflight.apple.com/join/sUshezju

Has anyone experienced anything like this before?

I very much doubt that the splash screen could be tagged by anyone or anything.

Whenever you receive a rejection notice like this, they should be accompanied by screenshot(s) of the offending materials, so I would check out that screenshot and consider uploading it here as well and/or letting us know what is up. The system may automatically trigger at things like cleavage or rude words.

Google Play is taking down apps with “Corona” in their name under their “You can’t capitalize on a natural disaster” rule. This sounds like Apple is doing the same thing and they are seeing the Splash Screen and saying “Corona = Virus”.

I would reply to their testers and point out that this app is made with Corona SDK from Corona Labs which has been around since 2008, well before the virus outbreak. There are legitimate uses of the word Corona that are not virus related and see what they come back with.

I will talk to Vlad. Maybe we can change the art in the Splash Screen to mitigate this.

I got no hint of what I might have done wrong … this is what they send me. Sk%C3%A6rmbillede2020-03-12.png

and this is what I answered …

"Hi, could you please inform me about what kind of “potentially objectionable content, such as nudity, pornography, and profanity.” my app contains?
As far as I am aware there are absolutely NO such content in my app, since it is a math training app, without any kind of user-generated content, foul language or other things that might upset users …

The only thing I can think of is that the app is made using the CoronaSDK (https://coronalabs.com/) a 2D game engine that has existed for a decade - It’s a free piece of software with, the only drawback that they display a splash screen advertising the game engine when the app starts up. Something not up to me.

If that should be the case, please contact me so we can get that misunderstanding solved?

Greetings from Anton Sølvsten"

Jesus Christ, the world is going bonkers. This virus has been a great excuse for middle managers who spend their time in pointless meetings to get involved and make rash, un-informed decisions.

Did you check if you have said screenshot attachment(s) in your resolution center?

I offered a few suggestions to Vlad on some options we can take. Let’s see what he comes back with.

But let me throw out one idea. Corona Labs is in the position it is today because people were resistant to pay for Corona’s development. If you like Corona and you want it to survive, then its survival depends on community funding. So if you want to help Corona survive then it would be really great if you contributed.  Buying a splash screen control plugin today, is the same as doing a contribution later. So buying it today is supporting Corona’s ongoing development.

And it solves the Apple issue.

Rob

They didn’t send me any thing, only what I have already send a screenshot off!

Guess I will try to solve it by buying that splash screen controle plugin … Was planning to buy it anyway. But just wanted to wait a little while, my money are pretty low right now, and I have seen other apps flop spectacular lately!

I just wanted to hear If other had the same experience … Have heard my account of apps being rejected for strange reasons over the years, but this one shure take the first prize!

Oh thanks Rob - Came to the same conclusion and Yes I like Corona a lot!

Though I work as a UI designer in Unity as my dayjob (sorry for swearing)

OK they confirmed, it was the splash screen, But I have bought the plugin, and resubmitted … Now Im waiting for them to review it again

Wow… i guess that means corona engine might want to consider a new name if google and apple are banning corona apps for simply having the engine’s name there

I’ve talked with Vlad and we have a couple of paths forward.

Both Google and Apple are being over-zealous about that. I doubt they are telling Corona (the beer) that they have to take their name out of Branding. But they are not really caring that Corona means Crown in many languages and that’s a perfectly valid term. They are not caring that something that’s been around for 10+ years and is named after the Sun exists. So for the rest of us… /shrug

Rob

people and scammers do target events like this for monetary gains - fearful or panicing people make great targets

I agree with Rob.

Buying splash screen control plugin will really help.

Also I’m curious.

@antonsilver

The rejected app was a new one or an update?

Many developers simply can’t afford the $99, especially when providing free apps or apps with a low amount of costumers. So it’d be really helpful for us if Corona would change the art of the default splash screen - at least as long as this virus hysteria lasts  :frowning:

@MauMau

Splash screen will be removed on May 1.

(Unless something has or will change.)

Those who can’t afford it, can just wait for a few days.

Until then, make your app even better before uploading to stores :).

I still don’t know (and I would like to) if this affects new apps or updates!

I updated one recently and removed the logo for now. I have the plugin but have not bothered to remove it for some apps, but I figure that the time was coming that they would not approve it.

The latest daily build 2020.3577 has been updated with a disabled splash screen control.

Rob

Hi, just an update - Did Buy the splashscreen removal plugin, All things considered I thought “What the heck, you guys deserve the support for your great work”. Was too curious though, so I resubmitted the app after making a bit of changes.

Removed a “Made with Corona” text from the About section, and also found a meta tag on the appStore page (under Danish language) where I had written “Made with Corona”, yes that’s how much of a fan I am. I didn’t remove the standard splashscreen though!

This time it went through, and it is now in the iOS appStore. So we will never know if I just got a grumpy tester, or if there was some kind of generic code looking for the word “corona”…

But want to add that, I do have recieved comments on the splashscreen from friends and colleagues, It does cause its share of raised eyebrows!

So sorry to say it but the splashscreen is disappearing with the next update, even though I personally think we should be better to lable our games/apps as made with this wonderful 2D game engine.

By the way If you are curious about what a design guy and a dad, with a full time work, can do in corona.

When he decides that he want to make an app in his spare time, and that coding can’t be that difficult!
