Do I need to use my real name on iTunes app store?

Hi guys.

This maybe a strange question but here it is:

Do you have to put your real name when you distribute an app on the Apple store? My understanding is that you can use your “company” name but only if you can prove to Apple you have a real company. Am I wrong?

Why the question? I have a day job…

I am getting ready to apply for the apple dev program but was hoping to use a fictive company name. I will have a web site with that “company” name. Is this possible?

Thanks guys.

Mo

Apple is going to ask for documentation that you’re a real business and that you are authorized to speak for that company. I think you also have to have the company based developer’s license too (not sure though)

If you want to avoid using your real name (individual developer) you can form an LLC. Depending on what state you form it in will determine cost and rules. I think the fees here in NC are not too bad ($150 range) but you have to issue an annual report to the Secretary of State department each year and a few other quirky rules.

Sites like Legalzoom.com have LLC’s that you can do online, pay them your fee, and they setup all your paperwork for you.

So for a couple of hundred bucks and some paperwork and you can avoid using your name. I was seriouslly considering it, but I got more important things to spend my money on rather than obscuring myself.

I would say that the answer is a partial yes.

I registered with Apple as an individual developer. When I submitted my first app for sale, they did let me put in my company name and website. See this page for example:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tomato-pace-free/id446654977?mt=8

My company name and website appear in a couple of places, but if you look at the “Seller” field you will see my real name. I don’t think Apple has an option that would let me change that field to my company name.

Thank you so much guys for your fast response. It confirms what I thought. Still, as you said robmiracle, it may not be worth it to worry about it…

Thanks again.
