ex-GS users switching to CORONA

i wouldnt count on gamecenter in gs i think they are setting it up so they have their own leaderboard system that only shows gs games wouldnt count social network either unless is within the gs system
if coronas price does go up i think it would be a reasonable amout for the added features
stencyl doesnt count as its not an ios dev app yet and who knows when look at how many others say coming since the last month and nothing yet

bottom line get corona its worth it
just my opinion [import]uid: 7911 topic_id: 2645 reply_id: 9630[/import]

Here goes to nothing, thanks jstrahan  [import]uid: 7856 topic_id: 2645 reply_id: 9631[/import]

its not nothing beleive me
i was going to wait till the last minute to get also just to make sure i could use corona but decided to go ahead last week and get it which makes you want to learn it more since your paying for it
so far ive completely rebuilt my gs splash screen in corona with facebook link added ( cant do that with gs ) and now adding more to it
i have a new game close to being finished, an app thats about half way done but thinking of starting over now that ive learned alot more, and im redoing exp Jet in corona with new graphics, leaderboards, fb, new sounds, better control, and more game play

corona is the best tool for me and youll find its the best for you [import]uid: 7911 topic_id: 2645 reply_id: 9632[/import]

@Carlos
no thank you and everyone at anscamobile
ill email you later about something [import]uid: 7911 topic_id: 2645 reply_id: 9635[/import]

ps i just got a magic pad, best thing since sliced bread and corona [import]uid: 7911 topic_id: 2645 reply_id: 9636[/import]

For me, GS is:

  • very slow at runtime

  • very unstable at dev time

  • lacking in features

  • too expensive (for unbranded)

  • too inefficient to develop (like a simple IF statement takes too long)

  • evolving way too slowly

  • lacking in communication (major issue)

I decided to look at iDevice development some months ago and started with GS. After I few days I hit most of the above issues. I remember mentioning Corona over there back in August which is when I had had enough of GS due to the problems above and had found Corona.

I’ve been a professional developer for almost 20 years. I know what works for me and I know that I need a certain amount of power and flexibility. I don’t want to be restricted by the toolset and I know that if I can write some code, debug it and have an efficient “code to test” lifecycle then I can figure the rest out.

Corona ticks all the boxes for me and feels “right”.

I certainly would never “go back”… I can’t see any reason why I would want to.

Besides, Corona is also one of my favourite beers! [import]uid: 8353 topic_id: 2645 reply_id: 9642[/import]

+1 @thegwill
im never going back either im enjoying the coding [import]uid: 7911 topic_id: 2645 reply_id: 9644[/import]

I’m sure GS is right for some people as a lot of people can’t (and don’t want to) write code. In that respect, it’s an OK product but still has a lot of problems even for those users.

I hope they do well and I was reassurred to see that they had listened to their user base and did a u-turn on the shared revenue idea. At least they’re listening.

But, for me at least, GS is like painting with numbers (and the numbers don’t go up to 11).
[import]uid: 8353 topic_id: 2645 reply_id: 9648[/import]

Yes I’m glad they changed their mind also and I wish all the friends I made there and decided to stay well also
I’m very grateful for gs because without them I don’t think I would have every started programming for iPhone although I tried with Xcode a few times but now my new home is with corona but I will visit gs forum from time to time just to see what’s happening and talk with some friends I made there [import]uid: 7911 topic_id: 2645 reply_id: 9649[/import]

I will continue to use GS, but only for certain things - I do love the tool, but I don’t trust the company any more. It’s likely I will use it for various projects I have already got templates set up for, at least for the foreseeable future.

That said, Corona is #1 for me now and that isn’t changing; every single thing is better here.

By the time we have an update that lets us use OF achievements again I actually think I’ll have a game ready to go and that it will be by far my best one yet ^-^; I love Corona. [import]uid: 10144 topic_id: 2645 reply_id: 9652[/import]

I saw that GS had changed their mind too, I’ll admit that 4% of me considered returning to GS but the rest of the 96% of me kicked 4%'s ass, slapped it and then buried it in a little box at the bottom of the garden.

I have finished 2 apps with Corona now, one of which was a game I’d already created in GS. The Corona version runs a million percent quicker and feels like a real game instead of an unstable cheap game. Sure, Corona has a steeper learning curve but I’ve never coded before in my life and (admittedly with a little help from the community and Carlos… As if we’d get help from GS staff!!!) I have 2 full working apps currently waiting for review with Apple.

Ace [import]uid: 9899 topic_id: 2645 reply_id: 9654[/import]

That’s great Ace. There are so many pluses to using Corona, but besides the staff the best has GOT to be the load times.

I made a soundboard to learn about scene/screen management as my first little “learning project” with Corona. It contained about 40 sound files - it had very low load time at the start and NONE while changing scenes at all.

Can you imagine how that would run made with GS? Even my most basic GS game has lag/load between scenes.

I’m seriously hyped about what I’m working on right now; I haven’t been this excited about a game before - plus I finally get to use a splashscreen a friend of mine made me months ago! ^-^; [import]uid: 10144 topic_id: 2645 reply_id: 9655[/import]

Haha I know, I got to the end of my project, which felt amazingly satisfying, then was like, oh, crap… Gotta make a splash screen now haha.

My email address is info@instantmashgames.com, gimme an email and I’ll send you the project and take a look at it if you want?

I made a soundboard first of all too, Mine only had 20 sound files but I was still amazed at the speed that the app ran.

I’m starting a new game today which I’m pretty stoked about too!

Ace [import]uid: 9899 topic_id: 2645 reply_id: 9656[/import]

I absolutely will email you; I’d LOVE to see your project

I’d offer to show you mine, but that will have to wait a little bit - my code is terribly messy. XD Still, I have a screen shot or two

I’ll email you shortly.

Peach [import]uid: 10144 topic_id: 2645 reply_id: 9657[/import]

Its really cool all you GS developers are moving over to Corona. I looked at GS before deciding upon Corona as my goto dev environment (maybe Unity as well) and ive not looked back.

Over the last year Corona has grown and become more powerful, stable and with new features like the physics being implemented all the time things just get better and better.

From helping out on the forums and reading this (long) thread I have noticed that a lot of you are still thinking in GS mode and are looking for similar techniques in Corona. To me this seems like the wrong way of doing things, you would be better exploring the best way of implementing something programatically in Corona that trying to copy a feature of CG. [import]uid: 5354 topic_id: 2645 reply_id: 9672[/import]

@MP
I think I’m getting it but just incase examples
May help others that are having a hard time getting it [import]uid: 7911 topic_id: 2645 reply_id: 9673[/import]

I think it’s pretty cool as well.

Also I’m eating Pringles right now. Srsly. XD

As to thinking in GS mode; it’s not really avoidable and at times it can even be helpful; to those who’ve come from GS and don’t know any coding languages at all, knowing how to set up certain rules for certain results could prove very useful. (It helped me when learning about functions :)) [import]uid: 10144 topic_id: 2645 reply_id: 9674[/import]

I had a little knowledge of how functions worked before corona from when I played around with vb but I think what really made the whole corona thing click for me was then 8 minute game video and the webinars [import]uid: 7911 topic_id: 2645 reply_id: 9679[/import]
