Have any of you, used ads as your source of revenue in your app? Is have a paid version a better option in your opinion? [import]uid: 12716 topic_id: 6589 reply_id: 306589[/import]
Hi ciaphaus,
I do not use any ADs with Corona apps that I have on the marketplace. However with some other apps that I had made in Objective-C, I do have iADs or ADMob serving ads for me.
I might not be doing something right, coz despite the number of ad’s served on AdMob, my revenues are quite low and of late, I found them all missing, cleaned up like some found their google accounts. So I am going to change my AD Source.
As for iADs, I am not in the US and many of the users of my apps are also not in the US, iAD is localised to display ads only in certain parts of the world, namely when those parts lie within the US.
I do not get a lot of money coming in via ADs but it is almost like 5/6 people purchasing your app at $0.99 in a month, which is good enough. Pays for nothing, but feels good.
Now about your question on Paid version vs Fre version, If the thousands of users that have my apps, if they were to pay $0.99 to me for the app, that I have for free, that would be a nice thing, I do not have to make space for an AD in the UI obstructing some elements. Many users do not purchase and expect free stuff, so i do not mind placing an AD there and they do not mind seeing an AD there, however I have got some emails/comments where people have said, I’d rather pay the $0.99 get rid of the AD.
cheers,

Thanks for the awesome post jay.
From my personal experience I feel that the IOS market is extremely saturated. I sold about 5 of my app on the IOS markets compared to 25 so far on the android (its been up for a month). Now i’m not saying abandon IOS because people are willing to shell big bucks and it tends to get on the news more than android. But overall I feel that your either gonna hit jackpot or bust. Does anyone else have a different experience? [import]uid: 12716 topic_id: 6589 reply_id: 26221[/import]
@jayantv -> Thank you for the insightful post.
@ciaphuas -> Yes. In my experience, iOS is fairly stable for a good margin of the products and sells way more than Android (our latest stats are about 80 times more).
That said, games are extremely competitive. None of our 2 attempts at games got anywhere near getting back production cost.
The other markets (utilities, education, etc) are way more stable and pretty much always pay off.
As for ads, we had a couple of runs with Admob in apps written in ObjC. The performance was pretty bad. Worse yet, users complained that they got a free app with advertisement (insert a felt 12 billion exclamation marks here).
In my general experience, paying users have always been way more friendly, supportive (e.g. submitting bugs to the helpdesk) and positive in their reviews.
The “free-app” crowd is there for a reason. They either don’t have the money or don’t want to spend it. Both aren’t good target markets. Plus, staying paid, saves you the experience of watching people who got your work for free try it for 2 seconds and then posting 1 star reviews in badly written “leetspeak” complaining about a lacking feature that is already in your app. [import]uid: 10292 topic_id: 6589 reply_id: 26240[/import]
Another great post…it’s information like this that can help developers target their apps a lot better [import]uid: 12716 topic_id: 6589 reply_id: 26344[/import]

Overall seems like Itunes is a losing proposition where you have to make $150 in profit before Apple will let you withdraw the money YOU earned. Totalitarian policies at its finest. [import]uid: 12716 topic_id: 6589 reply_id: 28254[/import]
