Feedback on new UI

So I was goofing around in Photoshop not really sure what I was doing other than I needed a break and came up with this new UI base on my swipe game logic and granted the grid would never be fully stacked like this just wanted to see how hi I could make it.

After it started to show signs of life I had a thought about a turn based puzzle game like a mix between chess and checkers (and no they are not all going to have hearts lol just lazy) they would have diamonds, clubs and spades…

Anyhoot any feed back would be great

And yes I made everyone of those dang boxes by hand not using any 3d plugin or blender, max etc. Why? you ask well… I wanted them as shapes so i could scale them without loss or have to re-render them they are particluar little bastards thats for sure

All I can say is that your UI skills are awesome to say the least.

I usually use Photoshop / Illustrator to make my graphics whenever I can, but I usually end up contracting the bulk of the work to somebody else as I’m way too slow to get anything useful created.

Thanks

I use to be just like that lol, I could always see exactly what I wanted but for the life of me couldn’t figure out how to even work the UI inside of Photoshop (let alone know what each of those dang tools do) until one day my buddy showed me some things and introduced me to shapes and everything just clicked in my brain and haven’t had a problem since

Did you do all of the art?

For the most part yes, some of it was bought and ripped apart and put back together to get it to look the way I wanted

Took forever to get the boxes looking just right which I did by hand and wasn’t until I put a bevel on them that they even started looking like boxes lol

Whelp, I’d say success. It’s looking good.

Oh, and feedback, the lighting on the icons should all be from the same direction IMHO.

Why didn’t you make these in a 3D app? Seems like by hand would be painfull.

Thanks

I agree on the lighting, for quickness sake I simply just did a ::scale(-1, 1) so will end up making that art instead to smooth it out.

The extent of my knowledge of 3d Studio Max, Blender etc. is pretty limited to opening a model up and applying tags to bones etc. for programming in cryengine etc. for whatever I need at the moment.

Funny thing is I actually did try just popping into 3d mode in photoshop but for the life of me could not get the box rounded and the lighting just the way I wanted so in the end I just grabbed the rect/shape tool and made 3 sides and tweaked the gradient on each side, tweaked the perspective, then added a bevel with top light of white and bottom light of whatever color I was using and put a drop shadow on it.

One of these days I will get around to figuring out how to use max, blender and what not but at the moment I find it is easier for me to create the 3d look and feel via photoshop, 90% of the learning curve for me is always how to navigate the ui and what tools do what.

Awesome work. Love the 3D look of the cubes. Most of us programmers would love to be able to do something like this on our own.

Wow if this ends up in a game, I’d definitely like to play it. Great job!

To be honest, as a developer I’m a little jealous about this lol. I wish I was at least half this good when it comes to design! Looks really nice, keep it up and let me know once it ends up in a game!
