Finally 100 downloads in a day. (Android)

My latest free app has been downloaded 130 times since being released on Saturday morning (UK).

“Watch F1 Live” can be found here

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.goldstonesoftware.watchf1

Unfortunately it is a spoof/joke app and doesn’t deliver quite what the user was actually after. It shows a photo of an F1 key rather than showing the Formula 1. It only took a couple of evenings to write and do the graphics for.

130 downloads is more that twice as many as my “Harry and the Octopus” game has ever had which has been listed over 4weeks! Grrr

I think it shows when we are creating apps and in the absence of large marketing budget we should be targeting the keywords people search for more. In this case F1 is the popular keyword, especially this weekend.

So my game “Harry and the Octopus” will never really rank well and people will rarely find it. I know some of you use “kids” in the title from childrens games and “math” in maths games would be fairly obvious but what are peoples views on keywords for games that don’t fit a particular genre?

Also has anyone got any ways of finding what keywords people are using to find apps/games? At least then we’d be able to create apps people want!

Hey Steve, I think you are really hurting your brand by releasing this app. It’s one thing if the user was aware that the app is a prank app but not knowingly downloading an app to have it do something not intended will leave a sour taste. Now they may associate all your apps as low quality. Is this worth having a bunch of 1 stars? [import]uid: 7475 topic_id: 23511 reply_id: 94321[/import]

Hey Sid, Thanks for your concern. I did update the description to say it won’t provide Formula 1 live and you can use it as a prank app but that doesn’t seem to have filtered down yet.

I’m not clued up on the marketing side of things but I honestly do not think I have a brand to protect. Yes I have a name, a bit of a logo and a few apps under that name but I don’t think that counts as a brand. Especially when only a handful of people are aware of that name.

If necessary I think you can remove any apps from the market so the rating could be removed, but hopefully that won’t happen.

Thanks again for your concern.

Any thoughts on keyword searching? [import]uid: 107098 topic_id: 23511 reply_id: 94331[/import]

My 2c:
You definitely have 130 people who won’t consider Harry & the Octopus now.

In what way can you use this as a prank app?
Someone would have to talk someone else into downloading it in order to make it a prank.
Its right up there with being Rick Rolled…
Anyway, you could try looking at Google Trends:

But the problem here is that it focusses on Brands and Celebs, neither of which you will own the IPR to exploit.

Maybe have a look at AppBrain, which gives top apps by country?
