First attempt at publishing

Hi,

Looking for for word of advice before starting the process of publishing (finalizating the app development at the moment).

It’s my first app and I don’t forsee or intend having significant revenue at all, but I’ll use to test how the ‘market’ works form a first person standpoint, so I’d like to publish it for free, see how it goes and THEN put a price tag on it and see how much it makes.

So is it possible to do so or you should manifest a definite intent regarding the revenue of your app during the publishing phase, by selecting some sort of contract rather then another?

How do I approach this?

Thanks!!!

Apple allows you to change prices including going from free to pay.  Customers won’t like it, but people do run “Sales” to lower the price of their app for the weekend to get boosts.

Google Play however is a different beast.  If you make an app Free on GP, it’s free forever.  You cannot charge for an app once it’s been free.  You could add in-app purchases (requires a Basic subscription or higher) after the fact though.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the answer. So far I am just intersted in the appstore, I gave a look to the submission process and my question stems from noticing you have to choose a contract for distributing the app for free or another to sell it for a price.

So you mean I can go first with the ‘for free’ kind of contract and then change it later to paied with relative price??

Thank you.

@akak

From an iOS app’s point of view there are no contacts that apply. You just change the price and date when it should be effective. You don’t apply a contract to an app yourself.

The contract you refer to is between you and Apple. There are three contract types available:

• iOS Paid Applications

• iAd App Network

• iOS Free Applications

Once you start selling paid apps you just need to sign the iOS Paid Applications contract. However once that’s done it’s valid for every paid app you decide to make. If you start to Implement iAds you sign the iAd contract etc.

You can change pricing whenever your want, and how often you want. If you intend to start with a price of Free, and later go to paid, you could mention in your app description that you have an introductory sale, and it’s free for a limited time as a sales pitch.

Thank you @ingemar,

so if I understand correctly, had I to submit the app now, the procedure would be:

publish for free and sign a IOs free applications contract  --> wait some time --> change the price to x amount and sign a IOS paid applications contract

Without having to resubmit the app and go through the whole process again right?

I would assume so, but I have to admit that I had free and paid apps to begin with, so I signed both contracts from the very start.
