Full workflow tutorial ?

Hi all, first poster here.
I’m a Unity programmer looking for another package to take my future projects over to iPhone and Android. Coronal looks like it fits the bill. The only thing missing for me is a good solid tutorial that starts with the basics (i.e setting up the screen and graphics) through to basic object control and various functions such as collisions, variable tracking etc. Most dec applications have something like this, say a very basic Asteroids or Lunar Lander game. If not supplied by the makers then some kind hearted user(s) will often supply one, even if it’s in multiple parts, to help noobs get up and running.

Any chance of this from Corona users? Speaking for myself, such a tutorial will get me up and running in a day or two, rather than picking various forums and Lua sites to bits and putting the results together. I’d be more than glad to help out with graphics and editing the whole thing.
If you can help, or have any thoughts on this I’d like to hear.

There are basic and advanced examples in code ad a getting started tutorial.

The nature of stuff is pretty easy so I think you should be able to pic stuff up very quick…

That said… corona is no point and click system nor does it provide many of the stuff you mentioned. Think of it as canvas and colors … Not as building blocks…

The good thing ist that you won’t need a setup (basically) … Just use the provided functions to do what you want.

Stuff you seem to need is part of the game edition which currently is in alpha and has some nice examples with it too.

I think a tutorial as you may want it is not really possible because of the nature of programming… Just look at the different examples from the sdk folder. [import]uid: 6928 topic_id: 1352 reply_id: 3678[/import]

Hi Delta,

did you saw that the Android version of Unity 3 was announced? I might give it a try when it is out. The price is ok too.

About the tutorial. Which format? Video or PDF?

Cheers

Thanks for the replies.
@ Oderwat. Yeah, I’ll be ok with the coding once I get the feel for it. Amongst a couple of others, I’ve manly used Unity and I’m just a little unfamiliar now with running code in a ‘loop’ and getting the best performance from it rather than from multiple objects with their own scripts. I’m very interested in the Game Edition, I need to get my current project out of the way before I start on the Corona path though, so I’m picking up all I can before making the purchase.

@ Mike
I was looking at Unity for Android but as I’ve worked my way through my future ‘to do’ list of potential games I realise that they are all pretty much classic 2D in style, and Unity is almost offering too much power, and I could do with something more suited, with smaller memory footprints and without the full on 3D capabilities. I think I just complained about a package offering me TOO much there ???

My ideal games dev application would offer me 2D sprites, lots of them, and lots of grunt to keep them updated. Oh, a Snes Mode-7 zoom/rotate sprite system would be heaven! I guess I’m showing my age a little but my inspiration comes from the arcade games and home computer games of the 80’s up to the 16 bit days of the Amiga and Megadrive etc. To that end, GameSalad offers too little power and feature set and Unity offers too much. Corona looks to come bang in the middle and with Unity/Android out of the box.
As for the tuts, I personally prefer PDF but I wouldn’t complain about a video version either. Just something that gives a start screen, begins/loads a new scene on a screen tap/key press, detects when an enemy is shot and begins over again. But as Oderwat points out, that stuff could be on the examples of the beta.

Thanks for the good advice, hope to make a go of this. [import]uid: 7396 topic_id: 1352 reply_id: 3680[/import]

I think you can implement what you need very very well with Corona!

Even without the Game Edition… but will be a lot less work with the 2D Game Engine where you get event based collision detections from the engine itself for example.

BTW: GameSalad seems to be pretty slow… I recently bought a (nice) game which was made with it and it has very low performance on an iPad!

Good luck with your projects! [import]uid: 6928 topic_id: 1352 reply_id: 3681[/import]
