Future plans for windows?

Hi I just seen this:
http://az648995.vo.msecnd.net/win/2014/09/stats-1.jpg
Basically it looks like win8 phone downloads are half now compared to earlier in the year when it was the the majority. I know 8.1 OS will run our 8.0 apps but it’s slightly worrying and a sign that perhaps we might fall behind. Or, do you think there is no concern?
Also, I see one of your competitors at Gidreos are looking to do windows 8.1 universal with desktop. I already know a connection who has already got it working and has just released windows phone and desktop. It would be great to know there are plans or not for windows phone universal/desktop.

David and I talked to Microsoft about this and Microsoft responded that they’ll continue to support Silverlight built apps in the future.  Meaning that they still plan on supporting backward compatibility with 8.0 built apps.

That said, I think once 8.0 devices drops down to a single digit number is when we should look into offering a 8.1 version of CoronaCards.  It’ll still be Silverlight based and limited to Windows Phone, but it is easy enough for us to do.  There are additional features in 8.1 that would be a huge benefit to us all.

Regarding universal app support, I can’t speak for the rest of the team on this yet.  We’re still trying to make a decision if either universal app or win32 desktop app support should be next.  Both have their pluses and minuses.  Targeting 90% of the PC market with a traditional win32 desktop app is a pretty big plus though.  That’s as much as I can say at the moment.

Probably best just having a new Corona Cards for Win32 then yeah?  We can always combine them later I think to make it universal in the store. Wont Win32 be redundant too? Everything is going 64 bit isnt it?

Its great you are at least discussing it. You woudlnt want us all having Fear Of Missing Out would you  Would be huge to make apps for Windows! Anyways Merry Xmas Im off

One of the reasons we’re thinking that Windows Desktop App support (aka: win32) might be best is because we know there are Corona developers who wish to deliver apps via Steam.  Now I know that Steam doesn’t let any developer deliver their apps on their store unless they’re “green-lit”, but even if you can’t make it onto Steam, you can still deliver your Windows apps the traditional way via your own website.

I still see us supporting Windows Universal apps in the future too.  The question we’re toying with now is which order we do them in.  Anyways, I think it’s pretty exciting stuff!  Merry Xmas to you too.  :)

Steam, baby. Put the other stuff on the back burner.

There’s my vote.

lol… okay.  :)

And just to pose the question, do any of you have any interest in making Windows Universal Store Apps?  I can understand the convenience of it.  You can distribute your apps on Microsoft’s store just like you would on Apple’s app store and Google Play.  Distribution is simple.  Microsoft isn’t very restrictive, while Steam is very selective.  While I understand the market for Windows Store Apps is limited (only available on Windows 8, 10, Windows RT tablets, and Windows Phone 8.1), I imagine the market will increase when people start to replace their aging Windows 7 PCs with new Windows 10 PCs in the near future.  Or perhaps we’re not near enough yet? (I imagine Windows PCs will still be at that nice 90% market share even then.)

Anyways, I’d love to hear your feedback on this.  Thanks!

I think just getting windows 32/64 bit desktop would be the best bet personally. You can combine phone and desktop later so if you did manage to get Windows Desktop working separately you wouldnt need to worry about making it fit all other COrona platforms at the same time and the possible headaches that follow. Perhaps a seperate Corona Cards layer for using different APIs in Windows 32/64bit and another for Phone 8/8.1

Im not too bothered for Steam and im not sure it would suit the majority of Corona users. They are very selective and its a chore. You have to have very special games and get them upvoted. It would be a great option if you can do it though for some lucky Corona users to get through.

I’d like to see Windows store app support first!

Wow! Definitely win32! Not only Steam but other platforms are possible too. Also, that would be a dream come true

win32 of course.
