(GRIPE!) Come on Apple... a 3.2+ GB download for every SDK update?!

It seems like I just downloaded SDK 4.1 and XCode 3.2.4! Now it’s SDK 4.2 and 3.2.5? And every time it’s a 3 GIGABYTE or larger download?!! This is just insane… it’s like a 18-hour download every single time, and I’m on a respectably fast DSL connection… I’m sorry but there must be a better way… somebody please tell me if I’m just missing some obvious thing here. Many more of these and my ISP is going to start billing me for bandwidth overload. :frowning:

ive got a 5gb limit on my internet so i got two options download to iphone over 3g then transfer to mac or go somewhere else and download then transfer to mac [import]uid: 7911 topic_id: 4581 reply_id: 14441[/import]

I’m going to stop this download right now… I like your idea… next week I’ll go to a coffee shop with WiFi for half a day and try to snag at least HALF of this leviathan of a download before resuming the remainder from home. :slight_smile: [import]uid: 9747 topic_id: 4581 reply_id: 14443[/import]

most times i turm wifi off on my phone and connect to 3g since its unlimited then use an app to download the file i usually start it about 7 or 8 at night oh and make sure phone is plugged in and most times its finished by the time i get up the next morning then it takes about 2 hours to transfer from phone to mac over wifi [import]uid: 7911 topic_id: 4581 reply_id: 14444[/import]

@jstrahan: are you SURE it’s unlimited? lol… We just got “unlimited” data plan from Verizon, only to find in their terms stating that if we go over 5gb, then we’re obviously doing things that violate their terms (downloading illegal movies/music, etc), and they’ll shut down our account–possibly without notice.

Kinda dumb they can call it “unlimited”, but just saying, you might want to look over your service’s terms (if you haven’t already) before downloading too much stuff on it. [import]uid: 7849 topic_id: 4581 reply_id: 14605[/import]

@jon
Yea I know it’s really 5gb limit and they call it unlimited but there less of a chance that they will cut you off compared to the data connect plan that just says 5gb limit [import]uid: 7911 topic_id: 4581 reply_id: 14608[/import]

Last summer I had a month with 6 GB and a month with 9GB on my iPhone and never heard from AT&T. I think if every month is like that you might get a nastygram, but one here and there it may not matter.

Usually for SDK updates I grab my laptop and head to the local (non-Apple) Mac store. I’m a “valued customer” and they don’t mind if I use their bandwidth every once in a while.

My daughter watches alot of cartoons on her iPhone usually around 4-6 gb a month and they never say anything but we do have 4 iPhones an ipad and a data connect card and the only ones that go over is her phone and the data connect card which they do turn off at 5 gb unless you tell them to leave it on but then it’s about 60.00 per gig [import]uid: 7911 topic_id: 4581 reply_id: 14619[/import]

I hate the huge downloads too >.
Luckily my partner convinced me to re-sign up with our current internet provider who was offering us a cheaper price for 120 GB than we were previously paying for around 40 GB. (They’d messed up a few times with us and I guess really didn’t want to lose any customers as they aren’t a big company.)

In the old days on 40GB I’d have had a lot more of an issue; it’s still annoying and slow but at least I don’t have to worry about it eating into my download limits. [import]uid: 10144 topic_id: 4581 reply_id: 14640[/import]

PeachPellen… Telstra… I am not surprised you are not with them. They are not exactly a dream with Internet in Australia, are they?

I use Internode and I am kind of really happy with them, though coz of the location of my house, I am not in the ADSL+ area, so I pay slightly more for the speeds that are slower than ADSL+ and a quota that’s slightly smaller. And I am not on a Ranch or Property, I am just 1 or 2Ks away from Dairy Farmers Stadium, so much so that when there’s a game, I can hear the crowd and see the lights, but cannot have ADSL+ or 3G coverage, I get 2G only.

so downloading a 3/4 GB download that resumes everytime it is interrupted is a pain and takes like 8/10 hours. Tried to get the Universities fast connection that is actually SLOWER than than my ADSL and has a very small quota.

cheers,
