Help Me Debug An Issue? - Oscillating FPS w/ no workload

Hi guys.

I’m debugging some weird behavior and would like to ask for some help.

Its very easy help and should just take a few minutes.

If you can, please:

  1. Download this project and run it: https://github.com/roaminggamer/RG_FreeStuff/raw/master/AskEd/2018/07/whatFPS.zip

  2. Wait till the FPS meter (upper-left) is done ‘initializing…’ and write down the FPS it shows.

  3. Wait a minute or two and see if the FPS changes.

  4. Report your results as follows (this is my data)

  • Corona 2018.333
  • Running on Windows 10
  • ( optional data ) Discrete Graphics : GTX 970
  • Initial FPS: 49
  • After a minute or two, the frame rate will shoot up to 60 , then fall back to 49.

Thanks!

Corona 2018.3319

Mac Mini (late 2014)

Graphics Intel Iris 1536MB

Initial 63 FPS

after 2 minutes or more, still at 63 FPS

ran it 3 times, same thing

Thanks.

I did some experiments and ended up rolling back to an old restore point and the reapplying patches, drivers, etc.

Back in business.

I did some cleanup yesterday and my guess is I deleted something critical.

Corona 2018.3290

Windws PC

GTX 1080 Ti

i7-4790K

Started at 52 and keeps fluxuation a bit, usually between 51 and 54 but have seen values from 49 to 68 (my screen does 144fps)

Since cyberparkstudios got a stable number, could it be a mac vs windows simulator issue?

@Anaqim,

After I last posted, I installed the latest drivers for my card and the numbers went back down.

I suspect (for my prior post) that I didn’t pay close enough attention and the values were actually still fluctuating.

Regarding your idea that it is a OS X vs. Windows thing, I suspect as much too.

However, I don’t think it is the simulator.  I went back and ran version 2018.3202 as a test and it is also getting these numbers.

In summary, I think this is a issue for Windows 10 users but it may well be Windows 10.  I suspect recent patches for Spectre/Meltdown may be to blame.

Is your Win 10 machine up-to-date with all patches?  The answer is likely, “Yes,” because Win10 doesn’t really give us the choice of not installing them without being constantly pestered.

Thanks!

Yeah its a real pain when my machine auto restart and I have sublime text open.

I havent done anything regarding spectre/meltdown.

I’m assuming patches are being rolled out automatically.

Hope I’m right

I dont worry about fps when runing on Desktop machines.

They should have more than enough power to run almost anything 2D (within reason).

Other platforms, other issues
