Hi Carlos and the Ansca Mobile Community

Hello to the Corona community,

This is my first post, but it’s more of a message to Carlos. He won the Plush Gwen contest at my website. I’ve attempted to contact him, but he hasn’t responded. He has less than 24 hours left to respond. If he doesn’t reply by 9:30 AM (Eastern time) the prize is forfeited.

How he won is a funny story. As the author of The Unofficial GameSalad Textbook, I’m an outsider here. I wouldn’t exactly say an enemy, as I respect the Corona community, but I hate to code.

I understand that by choosing GameSalad, I’m missing out on the improved performance that Corona has. I was thinking on converting my projects over to GameSalad. So, I wrote this post…

GameSalad to Corona Conversion Project

I was surprised when Carlos Icaza replied. But in doing so, he was automatically entered into the Plush Gwen contest. The contest recently ended, so I had to judge all of the comments written during the duration of contest. Based on the contest criteria, Carlos had a post that scored rather well…

Feeling… 9 (See below)
Format… 1 (Only had line-breaks, no special formatting.)
Helpful… 8 (See below)
Guild Wars… 0 (Not about Guild Wars)
Originality… 4 (It was cleaver for Carlos to post there, but not spectacular.)
Popularity… 10 (See below)
Readability… 5 (Average reading, nothing spectacular but nothing bad.)
Spelling… 10 (All words spelled correctly.)
Timely… 10 (First post within 24 hours of a new post)
Friendly… 8 (Carlos seemed very helpful, even posting his email.)

When I first read that comment, I was filled with a wave of emotions - a an important category in the contest. I felt surprise. I also felt a bit of dread. I realized that I had opened a new front in the iOS software development war. Photics.com would become the center of the GameSalad vs. Corona debate. As a result, that single post by Carlos probably helped to change GameSalad forever. GameSalad dropped significantly in price. I believe that post is one of the main reasons GameSalad Professional is $499 and not $1999. That single post lead to, or enforced, a series of events that dramatically changed three communities.

Carlos, you have less than 24 hours to respond to my email. If not, you forfeit the Plush Gwen doll. (The second best comment will be selected.) Heh, I realize that this might not be a valuable prize to you, but it might be useful. You could give it away to charity or as a gift, keep it for yourself, or even throw your own Guild Wars game creation with Corona. That’s up to you. The doll was custom made specifically for this contest. It’s worth about $100.

And once again, hello to the Ansca Mobile community… nice place you got here. [import]uid: 13264 topic_id: 4733 reply_id: 304733[/import]

Hello There !

Thanks for reaching out. I searched my inbox and did not find your email. Then I searched my spam folder, and ooops. There it was. Gulp.

Thanks again and wow I had no idea I had won something. Maybe my luck is turning  for good.

It’s the start of Carlos’ plush doll collection. Soon we’ll see then lined up on the wall behind him when he’s doing webinars.

Welcome aboard Photics, there’s plenty of people here willing to help. Those who can, definitely do… although these forums probably aren’t as “chatty” as the one’s over at GameSalad.

If you hate to code, you might check out the module that I’ve made available, which takes a lot of common game/app development tasks and condenses them into either one, or just a few lines of code:

Also, Ricardo Rauber’s director class is also highly recommended. I use it in all of my projects (helps simplify “scene” changes and organizing your screens into different modules):

Maybe one of these days you’ll get used to coding and see it’s not that bad (with Lua).

Welcome and good luck!

P.S. Congratulations Carlos on your recent win! [import]uid: 7849 topic_id: 4733 reply_id: 15114[/import]

Hi Jonathan! Oh, I know how to code. I just hate doing it. HA HA! From what I’ve seen, Lua / Corona is similar to ActionScript. I think my experience to Flash will help me if I start playing with Corona. I think that this community is quite friendly. The developers are very active here too. I think that the roadmap is great.

Also… Hi Jay! I see that you’ve visited my website - http://photics.com/free-wav-wednesday-coconut-hit

I made a Sound Effects Collection that might be useful to Corona developers. Heh, the horse gallop sound didn’t make it into the collection. http://photics.com/sound-effects - It’s 500 sound effects for only $10. There are some free ones available too… http://photics.com/tag/free-wav-wednesday …Perhaps I should make a new Free .WAV Wednesday article, with Corona in use as the example.

As for the prize, I’m glad to see that Carlos claimed the Plush Gwen. It’s hard running a contest. I’m glad that it’s over and I think Carlos is a good winner. The Plush Gwen doll special. I was worried that someone who didn’t appreciate the prize would win. New York City is covered in snow, but I should be making the trek to the Post Office in the next two days.

I plan to visit this forum in the future. I enjoy discussing mobile game development… and the people over here seem really nice. [import]uid: 13264 topic_id: 4733 reply_id: 15117[/import]
