Hi from New Zealand

Hi everyone,

I’ve been lurking on these forums for quite a while, but due to the great info I’ve been able to find in the documentation, on the forums, and posted by other people elsewhere, I’ve been able to get through my first app and release it without needing to ask any questions. (I’m also very much a figure-it-out-on-my-own sort of person.) So a big thanks to the Corona team and the entire Corona community for everything I’ve been able to learn!

My main issue is not having enough time to follow through all the ideas I have for apps (I’m a PhD student in Physics, and working part-time running labs and tutorials for undergrad physics students, so my list of app ideas will continue to grow far faster than I can ever hope to complete them). As such, I deliberately chose a very simple app to complete initially, so that I could follow through the entire process without it taking forever. I intend to gradually increase the complexity of the apps as I go, trying to choose an app that only requires one new skill or functionality that I will have to learn from scratch. For my next app, that’s going to be adding interstitial ads and an in-app purchase for ad-free.

Personally, the weakest point of the process for me was artwork - the game was complete apart from the raven image sheet and app icon several months ago, but I didn’t want to release it until I was happy with those two aspects. I considered paying an artist for a small raven image sheet and app icon, but eventually drew the ravens myself by using an old episode of Ducktales with a flying raven (or blackbird) and a video of a bird in flight from YouTube as reference material, and I used a couple of stock images as references for the App Icon.

I recently posted regarding this first app in the ‘New Apps / Works in Progress’ forum; https://forums.coronalabs.com/topic/61031-balloon-defence-my-first-mobile-app/

It’s called Balloon Defence, and I’ve released it as Dixon Court Entertainment (or DiCE). Initially it’s been released on the Google Play store, but I’ll be signing up as an Apple Developer soon, and hopefully have it released on iOS in the near future.

Cheers,

Simon
