How can I make my tab bar match with the background and look good

Here is what my app currently looks like. I will change the font to something better later but I am trying to make the tab bar match and look better. I am not very good at making good gui.

Anyone has any suggestions on how I can fix it?

http://www.material-ui.com/#/components/bottom-navigation would be a good starting point (in fact the whole website).

Not sure how far you can push standard widgets code without modifying them to fit your requirements.
