How do you deal with writers block when creating a game?

Not sure how many of you had dealt with this? For me, I’m basically putting together a memory matching title for iphone(though probably develop a ipad version).

Though I’d like to know how other devs had to deal with it. [import]uid: 128294 topic_id: 25752 reply_id: 325752[/import]

I usually just take a break. Most people can’t think as clearly as in less stressful situations. So relax and let it come to you through an activity where you can let your mind go. [import]uid: 49520 topic_id: 25752 reply_id: 104128[/import]

I get this when trying to think up levels. I usually play other games to take my mind off it. Sometimes I use small elements from other games. [import]uid: 31262 topic_id: 25752 reply_id: 104134[/import]

I agree with the above, I find taking a break and playing games or watching movies helps - or reading a good book - anything to distract and inspire seems to help me  [import]uid: 52491 topic_id: 25752 reply_id: 104171[/import]

I do the following:

  1. Play other games to see what things could be fun or nice to integrate into your own games (these could often be simple little things)

  2. Stop stressing for a while and just focusing on polishing up your existing game, you know, just putting in little sounds and animations where possible. After a while you’ll get your inspiration back just by relaxing a bit.

All the above advice is good. Also find other areas of your game to work on, like the settings screen or the help screen. Break tasks down to smaller, discrete steps and focus on the little bits. [import]uid: 19626 topic_id: 25752 reply_id: 104205[/import]

And also, if I’m having trouble being creative I just move onto something else like working on the interface of the app something not so creative. It helps me step away for a bit but at the same time still be productive. [import]uid: 31262 topic_id: 25752 reply_id: 104219[/import]

Sometimes while taking a break, I find myself thinking only of ways to get past the snafu I’ve run into causing me writer’s block. I am building an app that is of carnival theme and the best thing I can do when blocked is do something mundane that I would have to do anyways.

Sometimes I go for lunch a little early (or late!) because doing things you are going to do anyways, is the surest form of getting your mind cleared. When I work early in the morning or late at night I sometimes go make a cup of coffee or take a shower.

I think if you force yourself to be distracted you will find that it is not easy to break through the block, but if you do something that will naturally distract you, it will be much easier. I can’t tell you how many “ah-ha!” moments I’ve had in the shower or at Subway.

Good luck! [import]uid: 50511 topic_id: 25752 reply_id: 104255[/import]
